LA said browns don't want to pay a guy $8million a season that plays 40% of their snaps. So unless price comes down not happening.

I'm mixed, in some respect I like that they have a plan and sticking to it (unlike Holmgren). On the other hand you have $60 m in cap space. Fucking make you team better.

Yeah, this "let all of your homegrown free agents walk and build the team through compensatory picks" plan is kind of bullshit. Perhaps Farmer is waiting for the market to settle in before he strikes but there is some talent out there that can help this team.

Skrine walking hurts, he got some decent coin. On top of that we spent two premium draft picks on the position last draft. I understand letting him walk. Other than that, who's left? Hoyer? Anyone QQing about that? Cameron? Anyone QQing about that? The guy played like 5 games and was invisible in those games except against the steelers. Sheard? Love to have kept him, but he's a 4-3 DE, not the right system.

Not sure where the compensatory pick thing is coming from. We wont see those until next draft anyways, and if Farmer doesn't help turn this around he wont be here to use them. Doubt he's banking on that.

Consider the source on that one though...Tony "fired by the Browns now works for the national enquirer of cleveland sports talk with a huge ax to grind and probably lack of sources" Grossi. Farmer is probably on the 5 year plan hoping to survive to see it happen.

The Jets refrained from spending too much money last year, got lambasted by their fans, and used that space to sign Revis. You pick and choose your battles in FA if you don't want to end up in salary cap hell. It's better to not spend big than to overpay players that handicap your future spending.

True, but the Revis deal isnt bad. Most of it is in the first 3 years, and if they pick a QB they wont have to worry much because of that rookie scale. If said QB ends up being great and gets a huge second deal Revis pretty much can be off the books/old.

They were also horrible last yr, coaches and GM fired, and then spent $40 m on a 30 yr old corner who wont score points. Pretty stupid what the Jets did IMO, esp consdiering Revis has proven nothing but never to be happy with his contract, but we'll see.

Or you can look at it like they wisely didn't overpay last FA season and then used that space to address a key need

Or... they could have signed one last season and maybe won a few more games. Perhaps their GM/HC would still be there.

And not a lot of those signings ended up working out. I do agree that the Jets should have spent more money, but you can't fault them for not making bad overpays.

Read that article. It will take a while but it might prove to be enlightening. I certainly got a better idea of how many bad contracts were given out last year.

FAs are often fools gold. Doesn't this support your opposing view? You seemed in favor of the Jets signing Revis.

This article is supporting Farmer, don't overpay for FAs. Have a plan, stick to it.

Bad contracts are only truly bad if they screw you in cap space. The browns have enough room to overpay for a good free agent or two. Only takes a couple of signings to signal to other players that you are serious and can attract more guys, and if it matters, it also shows the fan base they are trying.
Jags way overpaid for that TE, but they have space and needed that piece in the offense, and it doesnt really hurt them trying to sign other guys going forward.

This sounds like we're in agreement

I support the Revis signing because paying for the best player at his position (or 2nd best) is one of the few FA ventures that is actually worth it if you have the space

How often does the salary cap really affect teams these days? Teams have gotten good at working their way around it. I read somewhere that the Dolphins had 8 or 9 million in cap space and are signing Suh.

Surprised they only had 9 million in space. Ways around it, to a point. 6 teams had less than 10 million, 3 were over (chiefs, pats saints). Much of it depends on what you also have committed after 2015.

Pretty long article. I agree it ultimately will hurt them because it is tough to give that much to that position. What is going to happen when they have a QB worth the bucks?

To answer more directly instead of linking an article, it's stopping teams from being able to keep their best players. Demarcus Ware with the Cowboys, Suh with the Lions, and Graham with the Saints (well that was a trade but you get my point). I'd say the Ravens but as the article I linked earlier shows, they let their guys go on purpose and let other teams overpay.

The less cap space you have the greater likelihood of your homegrown talent leaving

I don't agree with that. It has to be a three way deal that might not take place until the draft. The Eagles need Washington or Oakland to trade up above NYJ.
