I have a question. Do you think there are more homosexuals today than, say, 500 years ago (percentage of population, of course)? I would say, yes........due to the permissiveness (and even encouragement) of our society today.

I also brought up a point that has been touched on here, and that is someone not feeling good about how to approach and deal with the other sex. So they just say........I'm gay. And find willing partners to take up the slack.

I tend to believe that the answer to the OP is both.

In nature, there is documented proof that some within a species naturally seek out those of the same sex. I can't site the exact data, but I know there has been research conducted that proves this theory.

There is also documented proof, again I cannot site the exact data but can remember that it has been compiled, that shows that homosexuality can be a learned sexual practice that can become a personal preference.

My own contention is that it all comes down to the stimulation that results in orgasm, be it masturbation or with an actual sexual partner.

Some reach orgasm with the stimulation that the same sex provides.
Some can reach orgasm with either sex.
Some can only reach orgasm with the opposite sex.

Are these desires innate or learned/chosen? Yes.

I believe that the tendency is with them from birth but because of societal taboos and familial pressures and/or personal embarrassment , it sometimes never manifests itself in overt lifestyle habits. In other words, homosexuals attempt to live a lie rather than face all of the problems that will engulf themselves and their families and in doing so, make their lives more miserable than they would have been by honestly facing the facts and living the "normal" way for them.....and yes heterosexuals out there, I did use the word normal.

I've seen too many gays go through agony for too many years to believe that your sexual orientation is purely by choice.

However, I believe that some do choose to pursue their own gender either from events in their life or by choice - in fact, it seems to be the "flavor of the day" in some circles (particularly among women).

Born. I too have seen and talked to too many gays to believe it's a choice.

That undoubtedly applies to some, but I would be very careful in making a blanket statement. There are some as you describe, but undoubtedly some who don't have a choice. They are born gay, and engaging in a sexual act is a choice. However, one can be gay and be celibate.

Depends on your frame of reference. Homosexuality and bisexuality was widespread practice in ancient Greece, particularly among the wealthy/elite.

The better question is: does it even matter?

Regardless of how it exactly happens, we should just live with it and not hold it against them.

I think everything's been pretty well covered in this topic, so I'll try to leave this as a final thought:

No man or woman would say they made a choice to fall in love with their spouse (or that they chose to no longer love them!). Why then would you say a man who fell in love with another man made a choice to do so?
