A little back story. I've been a New Jersey Devils fan for most of my life, and Martin Brodeur is far and away my favorite player of all time. The Devils showed no real interest in resigning him, and I'm not sure if I can support them anymore. I think he has earned the right to be able to finish out his career there. I know he wants to be the starter, but any good competitor would feel that way. New Jersey just simply cast him away. I'm just not sure if I can root for a Devils team without Brodeur in net. Am I overreacting, or should I use this opportunity to start supporting the local team?

Unless you're originally from the buckeye state and move elsewhere. You must continue cheering for the Ohio team.

I'm all for supporting local, but also think bailing on your life long team, especially over one move that definitely is for the betterment of the team, is kind of bitch-ish.

I've been a Penguins fan my entire life but I will not stop being a Pens fan even though the CBJ have been here for 14 years now. That does not stop me from supporting hockey in central Ohio though.

The style the CBJ play makes them one of the most likable teams in hockey combine that with an awesome fan base and now is a great time to be a fan

It's not just some move. Imagine if Jordan hadn't left the Bulls on his own, and they decided not to sign him again in the waning years of his career. Chicago fans would have been pissed.

Quit hockey altogether. Saves a lot of time, money, and emotions. I have done this with NBA and MLB. Great decisions.

Are you from Jersey? other than that, you don't owe them allegiance. If you are from C-Bus...what took you so long?

From SE Ohio. Closest hockey growing up was the Penguins, and I hate all teams from Pittsburgh. What took me so long, was the fact that the guy that came into the league when I started watching hockey has always been in net for my favorite team. Looking back, I'm not entirely sure I was a Devils fan as much as I was a Brodeur fan. I've just never had the belief that someone should change allegiances when it come to teams.

^^^ Except if your hometown gets a team.

I once was talking to a guy from Buffalo at the Bills/Browns play off game several years back. He was all decked out in Bills gear but he was at the souvenir stand buying some Browns' stuff. He explained to me that before Buffalo had gotten a a team, he was a Browns fan. He still liked and followed the Browns although he was a Bills fan first.

Doubtful Gallipolis gets an NHL franchise anytime soon.

Why are you pissed at the Devils for not resigning Brodeur? He is old and fat. He was terrible last year. He had a 2.51 GAA with a .901 save percentage. The Devils probably would have made the playoffs last year is Schneider was in net all season like he should have been. You can't blame the Devils for not wanting to re-sign him. It's a business. There's a reason no team has signed him. So, as you say he deserves, Brodeur DID finish his career in NJ.

This might me the best response I have gotten, and pretty much has decided it for me.

I root for the name on the front, and not the back, of my sports teams. I know it sucks when your team has to get rid of your fav player...sucks, but ya just move on. I still followed Rod Woodson when the steelers didnt offer him a big enough deal and always hoped he did well.
As a pens fan I always followed the jackets and hoped they did well. Hell, probably watched more CBJ games than pens game. Now that they are in the same division in makes it a bit more different but I still follow and hope they do ok
