Show how to solve the problem 378x6 using place value with regrouping. Explain how you knew when to regroup.

this was on my sons homework! What do you guys think?

378 x 6 as (300 x 6) + (70 x 6) + (8 x 6) = 1800 + 420 + 48 = 2268

That's what I do when I multiply in my head. I didn't know it had a name.

I would have to imagine that it gets more complicated than the example above, from what I have seen online.

Eh it's trying to provide a way to teach critical thinking to kids because the amount of state testing currently going on has gotten so ridiculous that it seems all teaching is about covering as much as possible opposed to going in depth on certain things. One thing I'm certainly not going to do is follow this, once I get my job it's gonna be all depth cause it's fucking history

My problem is with the wording, last week he was doing expanded form, so 817 is 800+10+7. So in this problem no mention of the word expanded form, just place value with regrouping.

Many of you are saying you multiply that way already, when did you learn to do it? I didn't learn to do it until I understood the long way of multiplying each number and carrying. My dad taught Algebra for 25 years, and he always said, "learn to do it the long way then think of short cuts."

I was not a fan of this Common Core math method either until I saw results with my daughter. She is in 3rd grade this year and had trouble with Math last year (took her long time to do addition or subtraction). Now they are focusing on this regrouping for adding large numbers and the teacher said she is at top of her class in speed of doing these problems correctly. Wife and I looked at each other and said weird for us, but working for her so great.

I agree the long way should be taught first. But there are many that just go apeshit over the new math and want it eliminated because they don't understand and that's not how they did it.

How many k-12 teachers were involved in creating Common Core? Google searches are all telling me that there weren't any involved in that process.

I taught both the long way (the way I was taught) and shortcuts to my 3rd grade class. Some kids chose one over the other. All I cared about was the final answer and showing me how they got their.

That's how I do math in my head, but I don't think anyone ever specifically taught me. It's a quick and dirty way to get an order of magnitude estimate on things, which is much more useful in real life than the alternative.
