Why would the Pats not take a safety on that 4th down punt?

Depends how much time they could run off. If they could run it down below enough to get a play after the kickoff, sure. However, say it's 35-33 with 8 seconds, it's possible a return could at least give Tucker a 60-yard attempt. Don't want to put yourself in position to lose. Panthers are able to even it up at 7 after having a 1st down on the 10 yd line, a tough place to score a TD from.
