Went back in mid-July. Not a ton, but enough to make the trip enjoyable. It was more of a camping/canoeing trip than a fishing trip this time. The next time it will be purely for fishing. Instead of canoeing to a new campsite each day, which takes a ton of time and energy, I'll be canoeing in to my destination and camping there for the duration. That will give me all day to fish, and it will be easy to hit multiple lakes since I won't be hauling all of my gear with me.

Are the lakes allowed to have big gas powered mowers on them or are the like canoe only?? my best friend wants to go but Pull his Smoker Craft

Some of the bigger lakes allow motors.

Now I am looking for suggestions on kids gear. My wife and I were discussing Christmas gifts for our niece and nephew and I thought it might be fun to get my nephew some fishing gear and teach him how to fish. My wife called her sister and apparently he's been wanting to learn how to fish since this summer. Some older kids in their neighborhood are always fishing in the ponds nearby but his dad has no clue when it comes to fishing so he never had a chance to go out this year. Seems like fishing gear will be the perfect gift for him.

He's 6 but I'd like to get him something that he can grow into a little bit. We were at Meijer and my wife pointed out a Spiderman fishing pole. I told her to go away. It does seem like every kids set is made by Shakespeare, at least the sets I saw at Meijer.

I do recommend Ugly Stik for the rod because most kids will also use their fishing equipment as swords.....Ugly Stik's are practically unbreakable.

Also can't go wrong with some basic Zebco combo pack to begin with. Depends what cha wanna spend.

Probably looking to spend $50 or so.

If anyone comes across some deals for a sit in fishing kayak, please post here. I'm looking to buy over the holidays. Figure there should be some good deals being that fishing is basically out of season and there are deals this time of year.

Amazon has the 2014 Zebco 33 combo kit for $29.99, I'll likely end up ordering that.

Get him an assortment of pansfish hooks, small pinch on sinkers and show him how to use a slip bobber & stop. Teach him how to tie a basic Cinch Knot for attaching terminal tackle. The kid will be thrilled and so will you when he reels in that first bluegill.

One more thing...teach him how to take a pair of wire cutters and cut off the barbed end of a hook before trying to pull a hook back thru his finger after he runs one into himself. Everyone fisherman has done it and will do it gain sometime if you fish at all.

So I finally bought myself a fishing kayak. Picked up this one from Academy. It was on sale for $400 at the time. From reading around online, the Pescador is the same thing as the Tarpon 120 that retails around $1000, just rebranded. Probably about the best entry level fishing kayak for the money.

I plan on taking it mostly on Lake Erie as well as some other lakes/rivers in the region. I'll be doing a lot of Walleye/Perch/some Bass fishing. The only time I've been fishing on Lake Erie was on a charter, so does anyone have some tips for Walleye/Perch rigs and rod/reels? I'd assume you can use the same for both since I caught both when I was on the charter. I hear you can slay smallies around the break walls when they are spawning and it seems you are supposed to troll for walleye at a really slow pace, so I think I would be able to do it paddling.

Tiernan- the Hobie w Mirage Drive is amazing from everything I've read. Definitely top of the line. Probably will drop the cash on that if I ever buy another one, just couldn't justify spending that much for a first kayak.

Personally I'm a fan of (front drag) Shimano reels and Bass Pro Shop brand Bionic Blade rods. You can get the Sienna line of Shimano for around $30 bucks, Sedona about $20 more or Sahara around $80.
