It's at the same time not as bad, and worse than you would think. The stories about murder videos, child sex rings, etc. are pretty much totally false & scare tactics. The alarming stuff isn't gore porn or whatever, it's the ease with which you can access information & data if you have the knowledge/money.
I had actually spoke with a few different people over the last couple years who offered me celeb nudes in exchange for other stuff but I always assumed they were scammers. Plus I didn't have any interest in paying money for nudes.
I'm really skeptical this was an icloud hack. Also really skeptical this was the work of one guy. Usually to get into the various "societies" in the deep web, you have to first provide contributions of your own - think Fight Club, if it's your first night you MUST fight rule. So if you want stolen identies/CC #'s, you have to first post a few of your own for the group. If you want to launder bitcoin, you have to first help a few senior members do it, etc.
But occasionally you can get around that if you have enough money and a member of the group willing to violate the rules. I'm guessing some rich kid bought his way into the ring and decided to start posting everything publicly. He likely has images collected over multiple years by hundreds of different members who were individually able to crack an individual celebs phone/cloud storage.
I mean, if some lone person actually had the ability to crack anyone's phone at any time, I'm thinking they would have used the power to obtain inside financial information that they could have used to "legally" profit millions off of. Not post some celeb nudes for free.
