Haven't posted in a long time. Just moved back to the USA from New Zealand, have a job in New York, looking for advice on neighborhoods. Working in Greenwich Village, currently have a sublet in Bay Ridge till end of August to give me time to find something permanent. Bay Ridge is nice and all so far, but probably not where I want to be long term.
Where should I live?

All depends on what you're looking for.....surrounding neighborhood, commute, budget, living solo/roomies, etc.
Bay Ridge is far as fuck. I've been there a few times.
I'm kinda anti-Manhattan so I'll probably sound biased, but I'm all about living in other boroughs. I spend my first 3 years in Astoria. Now I'm in East Williamsburg and I love it. It's not quite as "happening" or hipsterish as Williamsburg proper but still great. I see myself living here for a few more years.
If you're looking for a quicker commute and can afford it, look into Chelsea.

We haven't lived in NYC since 2006 and only been back a dozen of times or so. In the interim Manhattan rents have gone through the roof. Working in the Village you should have good livable options from both the Jersey and Brooklyn sides. Queens is a bit more time but shouldn't be a problem. Manhattan is more or less prohibitively expensive unless you want 2-3 roommates. If you're married and especially with children it likely won't work, but the Chelsea/Hell's Kitchen areas are likely the best Manhattan option.
And from the Village location you are near the best restaurant in New York - Blue Ribbon on Sullivan between Prince and Spring.
