DUI checkpoints

I understand the importance of getting drunks off of the road, But on the other hand check points are a crock of shit. They pull over 5 or 6 hundred cards and issue a couple DUI's, a dozen seat belt violations, and one or two "outstanding warrants".

Is it worth pulling over that many people using that much police/man power to write a couple Tickets?

Here is a link for a guy in Parma that held up a sign warning of a check point, and he was sited for "obstructing police business". SMFH.

The fact that you can be detained at random without probable cause is reason enough that this should be considered an illegal search.

What I don't understand is why they announce where they will be.

^^^This.

I have a right to go from Point A to Point B without being stopped. And they stop you without probable cause. Seems like a blatant violation of the 4th amendment, but for some reason the Supreme Court says it doesn't.

I think it is within the law that the location be announced several days in advance.
A week prior to establishing Ohio DUI checkpoints, officials must notify residents. The notice must contain the date, time, and location of the checkpoint. A few hours before the checkpoint begins operating, a checkpoint administrator will issue an advisory that details the exact location of the checkpoint and the exact times it will begin and end.

I have no problem with them, especially since they are announced. If you're stupid enough to drink and drive, and least be smart enough to look and see if, when and where these checkpoints are/will be.

That's fine, but it still doesn't make sense to me.

If I'm going out, having a few drinks, and I know where one is...I'm for sure not going near it. Even if it takes me way out of the way.

Well they obviously work since they arrest people for DUIs during the checkpoints being out. Just because you are smart enough to avoid them in advance doesn't mean everyone else is.

They have to give notice because of the intrusion of your rights. It's an exception** to the illegal search doctrine.

**judicially created exception, the best kind

No shit, but there are a lot of idiots out there that don't pay attention to this information...who in their right mind would go anywhere near a sobriety checkpoint when they've been drinking?

You do, but you do not have the right to do so in a motor vehicle.

Yeah, that could happen--and wouldn't it be a bitch knowing beforehand and then forgetting about it!

I've never really had to deal with them. They were always in Boardman or Canfield rather than Liberty (or Girard or Hubbard if I randomly ended up there that night lol). Didn't need to drive at OSU, and they don't have em in Tucson (I would wager they have them in PHX).

For those that do deal with them, do you generally know when/where they'll be without proactively seeking out the info?

They usually publish it in the local paper and make psa's on the local radio stations a week before..other than that, I assume you Google "sobriety checkpoints in ???" and you can find out.

I don't have a problem with them as long as they are announced. I don't drink and drive and usually will be the one in my group of friends to offer to DD if needed.

How is it random when THEY are SETTING UP CAMP... they CHECK ALL passerbys... and they detain only those that they SUSPECT as drunk.

Therefore... how is it "random" and how is it "without probable cause"?!?!?!

I think hits meant detainment as waiting in line to talk to the cops.

You don't have to drive down the street that they have setup/camping at.

Besides... what do you all have to hide? if you're not drunk... why so worried/offended?

If you're offended with this, you're likely the same people that are offended that you have to take your shoes off in the TSA line (I'm willing to bet).
