Agree 100%!! It is sad to see the younger generation simply poke fun at his speech. He is a legend and deserves to go out on his own terms!!

I'm not simply poking fun at his speech. It makes for poor television and really just makes the legacy that Dick has built look bad as they force them out there year after year for the sake of "tradition". We all know he is not capable anymore, yet it is forced on us,.

It is his franchise...obviously the man is 190 years old, but he has the cred.
He actually looked and sounded stronger this year than last year.
I'd venture to say he is more lucid, and a better host than Seacrest is at 30.

(I'd give the edge to Seacrest...except for that crazy fake smile he does.........)



By the way...Guy Lombardo did it for years, and he was ancient.

If he wants to do it, let him do it. He's not hurting anything, except maybe his legacy in the minds of some people. If it bothers people so much to watch him, then turn the channel.

Life doesn't end because you have a stroke, and it's good to see someone continue to fight to live on his terms after such a debilitating event.

Seacrest has been hosting it enough years now to start a "new" tradition, IMHO. Dude is young enough to host it from now until 2050... there's a solid tradition to replace the old one.

I don't know if I would call him an embarrassment, but I was embarrassed for him. I felt terrible when he couldn't countdown from 20, and missed a couple numbers.

He went from something like 14 to 12 to 10 to 11, said 9 twice, then had to pause and go with the crowd.

Now, as far as getting him out of there. I'm for it. It just has to be done. My alma mater had an announcer whom you could not understand at all. He'd been there for YEARS. Everyone wanted him gone, but no one was willing to communicate the obvious with him. They asked my dad, and since everyone else was a pussy, my dad did it.

I have never seen my dad cry, but having to deliver this terrible news to this much respected and loved announcer (as a person, not as an announcer) brought tears to my dads eyes.

Yes, everyone wants Dick Clark gone, but who is going to be LOVING enough to sit him down and tell him?

Hopefully ESPN hires D*ck Clark and they allow him to do college pregame football with Lou Holtz.

I guess he's earned the right to call his shots. But it's sad to let people see him like that. Even for sentimental reasons or tradition, people can't possibly enjoy watching him. He's like a major buzzkill on the biggest party of the year.

Dick Clark is the executive producer of Dick Clark's Rocking New Year's Eve, which means that he has final say who goes on the show. Seeing how he's the executive producer, it's not like he's earned the right to call his own shots, he has the rights because he's the producer. It's not like people don't want to tell him he can't do, it's just that no one can because he has total control in the situation. As long as he want's to be on the show and is the executive producer, he'll be doing it. Hopefully since this was the 40th anniversary of the program he will choose to make it his last.

so cancel the show....and start a new show. Seacrest's Rocking New Years Eve.

I REALLY thought he was going to say he was done when he started chewing on his tongue right after midnight with Seacrest beside him in the studio. He started thanking Seacrest and saying how he couldn't believe it had been 40 years, but never said it.

I don't have a problem with this. After you've watched some of the people in your life suffer physical and mental setbacks, your patience with the situation will grow. He's just an entertainer - it's not like he's commanding the Armed Forces Nuclear Deployment Center or performing surgery on your six-year-old.

My Dad functions mentally at the level of an bright first-grader now due to Alzheimers, but I still enjoy his company and watching him enjoy his life.

I agree with this. I'm glad to see him out there, and in some ways, it's inspiring.

Yeah, they could rename the show.

Also, he can participate and be "great" to be there living life after a stroke, but that doesn't mean he needs to have much more than a token appearance. He's just not capable even in the very reduced role he's had.

Maybe he doesn't care and that's great, but many people would care and also don't care to remember an icon like that.
