Lets hope.

In all seriousness, they will play to win the 1st part of the game. But, if it is tied, or even the US is down 1 (but the other match is looking good for us, Portugal up 1 or something) with about 30-35 min to go, you will definitely see the teams settle in. If it is tied especially, as neither team will want to commit forward and risk a counter to lose the game. As Landon Donovan said, you dont need an agreement to do the smart thing. If a tie sees both through, and a loss doesnt (or in Germanys case, sees them finish 2nd), it would be stupid to commit forward and try to score.

It isnt so much about rigging an outcome and just not being retarded.

Let's go for the fucking W!
As I just stated, I think both teams play for the win to start. But it is just simply irresponsible to do so the last 30 minutes for either team if a loss alters your position negatively. It may not...depending on the score of Ghana - Portugal, in which case all out for 90. But if that game is dictating you play it smart at the end...you play it smart at the end.

I'm more worried about Portugal being just dead tired and unable to handle ghana, losing like 3-1 and the us losing by 1.

I honestly think we are selling this team short. Its time to realize that they are fucking good. Now, that said, we arent Germany. But it isnt like previous years where we need to park the bus and clear it 90 times to get a result. We can go out and play against these guys and try to win, yet be good enough still to come away with a draw.

It might not happen, but I am fully on board with lets just play for us and get our own damn result and not even worry about the other game.

...of course, Ill have my eye on it the whole time lol

I agree with you. I think we are really good. And I wouldn't be upset losing 2-1 because Germany is so good. Its just I am worried that Portugal is done and the speed and physical play from Ghana will crush them.

I'm with you. After yesterday, I'm fully on board with Jurgen and his system, decisions, etc.

Aside from some shaky defending at times, we were better than Portugal.

Yep, the thing that is most disappointing is had we held on, we wouldve been the ones dictating the game to Germnay (who would be fine settling for a draw) and avoided Belgium. Whoever comes in 1st here are overwhelming favorites to reach at least the quarters.

Assuming we go through, I'm not terrified at Belgium.

I watched both of their games and I didn't come away that impressed from either.

Just read that Ronaldo, who met a young boy with brain issues a few months back and paid for the nearly 100k treatment, shaved that ridiculous line in his head to match the kids scar.

I really want to like him, cause he is a great human being, but he is just such a bitch on the field that I cant root for him.

Still, thats a pretty cool gesture that everyone was making fun of him for...yet he didnt say why he did it and bring attention to himself.

He has looked pretty dis-interested in both games, although less so vs. Portugal.

If he is not interested in playing , put him on a plane back to the US immediately.

He also botched that 4 on 2 break we had in the 2nd half.

Bradley is fine. He's having a rough tourney but he's still one of our best players that wel'l need going forward.

Just take care of business vs Germany and we will advance.

True, although I was only speaking about how I'm feeling as a fan. I've had a couple friends tell me I should be happy based on "I would have been happy if you told me that before the tournament."

You know what the better statement is? You wouldn't be happy if I told you before group play that we'd beat Ghana and then blow a sure chance to beat Portugal and advance by giving up a 2 on 7 goal in the last 30 seconds.

He was very involved vs Portugal, and for the most part played pretty well. Just had some terrible mistakes. But he was also the #1 release for our defense when they gained control (along with Jones).

We need him to be at his best moving forward, which he hasnt been.

Even though it sucked the way the game ended yesterday, I heard a pretty good statement this morning that puts this on perspective: if the USA would've had to score in the last 15 seconds to tie the game and did, we'd be ecstatic today. The tie was deflating, but doesn't have to be defining....and as far as Bradley is concerned, he ain't going anywhere, so we have to get behind him and hope he has a kick-ass game vs. Germany.

I wouldve been happy with a draw after the Jones goal. It doesnt change the fact that we played awesome, were through to the knockout round where the Germany game was icing to see if we could win the group...to...a draw, where we arent even through yet, and there is a very real possibility we wont be.

I still have faith, but that was gut-wrenching and sucked. There really isnt a whole lot of positives to take away from the ending. That said, a ton of positives to take away from the tourney as a whole right now.

I'm with lhslep. I hate this line of thinking. This is more of a post World Cup discussion topic. I'm still pissed they tied and actually concerned how they react to this. That's as big of a gut punch you can get with a tie. It pretty much felt like a loss, and now they have to play a too German team who already is pissed they got waxed by the US in last years friendly. We will see what this team is made of on Thursday.

It would have just been nice to be clear and in the next round and able to rest some key players. Now I don't really know what to expect and the noon start pisses me off. I have to work ahead and hope to be able to take an "extended lunch."

True and I think that is vball's point that I reluctantly have to agree with. Emotions control the former part of your statement, but reason dictates the latter.
