Very few 7th round picks actually make the NFL much less an undersized DE who only won SEC DPOTY because he racked up sacks against sub-par competition. He was projected as undrafted and a special teams player at best but he's probably too slow to do even that.
In summary, he only was drafted because he was gay and if he makes the team it will be only because he is gay. This is the burden he placed on himself by making a big deal out of his sexual choices.
So there's little risk in drafting him and lots to gain. If he sucks, well he was a 7th round pick and that happens all the time. If he turns out to be decent you got a good player in the 7th round for pennies and he came with lots of free media coverage.
When did the SEC become sub-par competition? Last I checked they were kicking the shit out of the Big 10 regularly.
Anyway, now that I think about it he might be a bit hypocritical with his statements regarding him being just a football player but then doing the Oprah show. But honestly I think anyone of us would likely do the same for the pile of money he's being offered. In a perfect world this thing would go more like Jason Collins or Robbie Rogers where they came out, there was a big to do about it because it's an easy story, and then nothing much else happened until they were playing again.
