Aviles needs to play. I said it before the start of last year based on his time in KC, and I'll say if again after last year... Dude can give you some offense when given the ABs.

On the broadcast today they said that Kazmir was most concerned with Aviles in the Tribe's line-up. It's an interesting take and dovetails with what you are saying.

He is such an underrated hitter IMO. .275-.300 with good pop in KC when he played everyday. Overlooked by Gordon and Butler and even the guys in AAA who hasn't made it (Hosmer, Cain etc). Completely overlooked on his time in Boston.

I feel he could easily be an "overlooked" guy in Cleveland and hot .280 with close to 20 HRs and 75 RBI for us. He is a 5 or 6 hole hotter to me (6 for us with our lineup...maybe even 7 of Raburn does what he did last year). But the guy needs to play regularly, despite not having a regular spot in the field.

Team defense needs some serious work. Really sloppy play this inning.

Man, if we could face Jim Johnson every day we'd be 162-0. The guy is a bum that can't get Tribe hitters out. Baltimore knew what they were doing when they let him go.

Wow.

If I was a fan of the A's I would be marching on the Coliseum out there with a torch and pitchfork.

I said the guy was a piece of garbage opening night and he was even worse tonight. I would be pissed at my organization for paying a guy $10 million who can't even finish an inning. He literally looked like he was about to soil his pants tonight. If I can see that, why on earth can't the people who are being paid to evaluate talent.

I am just hoping Axford doesn't feel the need to channel his inner Chris Perez tonight and has a nice quiet bottom of the 9th.

Another one in the book for the good guys.

2-1 on the year now with another assist from Jim Johnson and his 45.00 ERA.

Great comeback win...overcoming a pathetic defensive inning. The A's have a great bullpen...and they've ruined it with Joe Johnson.

Seems like this happens three or four times a game for him--I don't understand his inability to stay focused for an entire game...is Adderall a banned drug in MLB? :o

Gotta love Brantley's hot start.... Have to find a way to play Aviles more.

Totally agree.

In general though I worry about the effect the constant moving guys around has on potential defensive consistency though.

Were it not for Jim Johnson's generosity last night we would have been done in by a disastrous defensive inning in the 7th that seemed to be a byproduct of guys who weren't used to playing with eachother.

I know flexibility is a hallmark of what Tito is trying to do, but some of the miscues could have been avoided with more consistent repetition.

Good win, but something to watch for going forward.

I like how a couple supposed Indian fans are pretty much demeaning their team's own wins by referring to Jim (or Joe, if you're Foot) Johnson as a bum.

Dude's sucked so far this season, apparently in the "NO ONE CAN RECOVER FROM TWO BAD OUTINGS" sort of way, but going 51-54 in saves with a 2.49 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 2012 is definitely not the work of a bum and while last year's work wasn't at that level (50-59, 2.94, 1.28), it was still better than what a lot of teams had, including Cleveland last year.

Heretic, he was 74th among relievers last year in FIP and 49th in WAR. Hate advanced metrics if you want, but you can't dispute his place in the rankings. He's not good, and the Orioles fans I know were glad to see him leave.

Looking at the third page of that link, I think the thing that surprised me the most was that Joe Smith was so low, as I'd always had the opinion just from reading/listening to people that he was a rock-solid lefty out of the pen.

Or that Vin Mazzaro was ranked better than Justin Wilson for Pittsburgh, since Wilson was one of the main mid/set-up guys and Mazzaro had two strengths (pitching out of jams without giving up inherited runners AND eating innings when a starter melted down).

I also think you have to look at relievers with a grain of salt because 3 or 4 utterly terrible performances can make the difference between a 2.95 and 3.30 FIP when you have such a smaller sample size of innings.

I never thought Joe Smith was great, but I think he may have been perceived to be better than he was because we had no elite bullpen pitchers to make him look worse.

That makes sense. After looking at Johnson's numbers from last year more closely, that probably happened to him to some degree (less than some guys because, as a closer, he pitched more times and more innings than many pen guys) because he had a couple of those horrid "less than one inning, 4-5 runs" outings that just destroy a guy statwise for a long time.

And I can see what you're saying about Smith. With Perez melting down badly and Pestano being a step back of where he was previously, he probably looked better than he really was, just by comparison.

Thank you. The save stats are misleading, as the guy blew 9 saves last year, and after being only the 2nd closer to ever save 50 games in back to back years his team couldn't wait to let him walk. Tells me all I need to know.

I did find an A's forum last night just to see what they were saying, and the first post I saw was already calling for him to be designated for assignment.

To his credit (after being booed off the field for the 2nd time this season) Johnson did concede that the team would likely be 3-0 if it weren't for him and his Chris Perez routine.
