So as a coach of three sports at independence high school all this talk about closing is crazy. However it has some oppurnity to become a remember the titans situation with sports. If you were able to combine the I high team with Walnut Ridge or Marion Franklin that team would be deep on the line and have plenty of skill plays to compete with anyone. And i am just talking about football not to metion the basketball, wrestling, track team. It puts a question out there of if this works why does the city have so many schools?
I almost forgot that the district is talking about closing Brookhaven as well. Put those kids at Northland or mifflin and it starts to create this super powers in the city. It makes sense on the basis of athletics but how will the communities react with these two schools with rich histroy being closed/consolidated. The oppurnity is huge but will send a shock wave to all the alumni at both these schools.

It happened in Youngstown. Y town used to have several high schools. Y.South,Y.North,Y Chaney,Y.Rayen,Y.Woodrow Wilson, they all combined with Y.East. Funny thing is all the best athletes went to the catholic schools of Y.Mooney and Y Ursulin. Youngstown has lost over half it's population over 50 years, but now they have one huge public high school who stinks at everything and 2 catholic schools who could play football with small college teams. Good luck in Columbus . That is the one Ohio city doing well and growing in population.

These schools need to close, period. I hope the board overlooks the emotional reactions and makes the reasonable decision.

To update this situation Brookhaven High School seems to be closing and Independence High School is staying open.
This is going to change the dymnamic's of city league sports. Where do those students go? I hear the plan is to split them into Linden High School and Mifflin High School. But what about our open enrollment option? I am happy for our kids at I High but sad for those at the haven. Having bulit a relationship with some of them i feel for them not having the chance to walk the stage at Brookhaven High School with all that pride that is in that buliding. I hope this doesn't have a negative recoil but these type of decision has been made in other cities (Toledo, Springfield ) it seems to be working out just fine. If our school district would consolidate cutting the number of high schools from 20 (Fort hayes, CAHS, Downtown, international ) to say 12 keeping these four schools as a choice i believe the sky would be the limit in the classroom and in extracurricular's.
Good luck to the coach's and athlete's in your choice's.
