I simply don't watch until week 1....but this being basically the first preseason game for everyone....how many of these excessive calls are on guys that will be deep on the depth chart? Maybe those guys are trying to prove a point but can't without the extra illegal contact/holding.

Just guessing

I understand what you mean and how theres usually more flags in the preseason than the regular season for reasons just like that. But this is excessive for even the preseason.

"ESPN's John Clayton did the math, tallying 27 illegal contact penalties in the first 17 preseason games. By comparison, there were 37 such infractions all of last season. We saw 53 defensive holding calls from Thursday through Saturday. Compare that to the 171 defensive holds from September through December of last year." And its def kept up this 2nd week

Thanks for the stats to back up your issue. Sucks the refs are ruining preseason fun for those that enjoy. Hopefully it is much better during the season.....but cracking down hard on something this early could let players know they aren't getting away with it this year. Might be wanting the casual fan even more as they prefer offense.

If they're going to call defensive holding and illegal contact this close during the season, Peyton's passing records may not last one year.

It also damages the Seahawks as they've been known as among the most aggressive at bending these rules in the past.

I don't prefer 45-42 games.

I like football games.

Let me know when you have stats that are relevant, such as comparing this years preseason penalties with last years. You're proving all of our points in that its a considerable decline when the games actually matter.

There will be a lot of calls early in the season. Defenses will adjust and refs will ease off as the season goes on, once the NFL realizes that everyone is pissed off about all the flags.

It won't be nearly as bad to watch as college basketball was this past year.

Thanks. How about week 1 2013 preseason vs week 1 2014 preseason? Makes sense to me that calls would decrease as preseason goes on.

Hated college basketball in the beginning of the year as much as anyone, but I thought it was fine as the season went on.

It was bad early on, but it will level out and there won't even be a noticeable difference by this year and years coming.

Similiar to Hockey a few years ago when they finally cracked down on obstruction. It was ugly early on but ended up making the game better.

Considering the press release the NFL released regarding this, they seem pretty set on it

Good God, the arrogance of Goodell and the NFL. The league is taking "bids" for halftime show performers for the 2015 Super Bowl. The finalists are Katy Perry, Rhianna & Coldplay....but get this, the league wants the performers to pay a performance "fee" or donate money to the league due to the "exposure" they are going to get.

I know. Because all three of those performers definitely are in need of exposure and could really be helped by pulling such a prestigious gig.

Goodell needs to get real. NFL halftimes are nearly always overblown garbage that (at least with my group of friends) are used for social hour with the TV muted (or us in another room) where the people watching them are the ones who probably aren't watching the actual game so closely.

Precisely. I would've loved to see Goodell try to pull that crap when Kiss played the SB. That money grubbing Gene Simmons would've laughed in his face.

....Not content enough to gouge season ticket holders for two full priced exhibition games.
