I was at your stage like 16 months ago, so I don't remember if this applies in the early game, but....

The best way to farm in the game for pretty much any level is barch, or maybe barch with a few giants mixed in...It is cheap and fast to build.

The key to barching in most cases is to just keep hitting next until you find a base with full (or mostly full) pumps and collectors, preferably located outside of walls, which they generally are...Then just spam in a bunch of barbs followed by a bunch of archers systematically around the base. Elixir pumps are really easy to tell if they are full, so just be on the lookout for that as an indicator that the person hasn't collected their resources and it is free for the taking. You might next 50+ times to get it, but when you find it, it will pay for all of that nexting and then some.

Get more builders if you can...If you are active enough you can keep them all busy all the way through TH9....

If that was all there was to the game I would have quit a long time ago...For me, the fun part is the wars and attack strategies...I was already a TH7 or TH8 when wars were introduced, so I don't know much about low level warring, but things get really fun at TH8 or higher and can keep the game fun and interesting for a long time if you get into the right clan and enjoy the strategy of selecting war targets and coming up with an attack plan.

He's funny...and definitely obnoxious, but he's helped me out a lot in what needs to be done.

New update hit today...Initial impressions from watching some vids is that I'm not a big fan of the new "air sweeper" defense...Lava attacks were the only viable TH10 3-star attack and I have to imagine this will make it pretty much impossible, there was already such little margin for error with go-lava hybrid attacks at TH10.

I often ran out of time with level 3 dragons before. Now there's no chance.

Upgrading question...

I have been following the model of upgrading the Town Hall only when there is nothing else left to build/upgrade.

I currently have a lvl 5 TH. All walls are gold, all defenses are fully upgraded, army camps, barracks, lab, spell fact, etc. The only things left to upgrade before going to lvl 6 TH are collectors and mines.

I have 5 of each, and I haven't upgraded them past like lvl 7 because I farm enough that I am never out. I concentrated on defenses and troop stuff.

So, even with 3 builders, it will take me 2 solid weeks to get all of the ECs and GMs up to lvl 10 (max level for a lvl 5 TH).

Do I do that still or say screw it and upgrade the TH to get more defense capabilities?

Oh, all storage units are maxed as well. I have like 50 man days (14 days with 3 builders, 2 of which still upgrading gold mines while the TH goes to lvl 6).

How strict are you guys on the 'don't upgrade the TH' rule? What bad things can happen?

Upgrade the TH. I put very little value in collectors/mines.

I use my ECs and GMs as barriers to distract troops while they are getting hit with defense towers. That's all they are really good for to me .

it all depends. I really only raid on the weekends, so I boost collectors on the weekdays when my shield is up.

Yeah, I go a minimum of about four hours between attacks, so the max collectors make me a nice chunk of change while my spells are cooking.
