The decline of the conference has been breath taking in how quickly it's happened.
Over the last 5-10 years, you can't expect more from Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan State. Ohio State is one of the top 5-10 programs in the country and have been for 20 years.

The conference goes as the big boys go. Three programs with rich tradition, Michigan, Penn State and Nebraska simply haven't carried their weight.

When they do, the B1G is back to near the very top. Right now, the SEC and Pac 12 simply have better teams from top to bottom AND at the top, their teams have produced nationally and against the B1G.

My question is, which of those 3 I mentioned are in position to actually rise to a true national power again? I have my doubts with the current state of all 3 programs...

Penn St is done for the next 5 yrs at best. scUM has to get rid of Fred FLINTSTONE before they have a chance to rise again.

I am not sure any of them will. They may be going the way of Notre Dame...not being relevant. Let's start with the easiest one...PSU. They got hit hard with their sanctions and now it looks like O'Brien may be headed to the NFL. They have the furthest to go to get back to national prominence. Next is Michigan; Hoke is just not the answer. He looks lost most of the time. What really has hurt UM over the last decade is the inability to recruit in Ohio like they did in the 90's. Ever since Tressel, and now Meyer, have locked down Ohio recruiting UM has struggled. This is not a coincidence. Last, Nebraska. I believe all it really takes is a new head coach for Nebraska. Pelini isn't it. Nebraska will still get the big recruits, they just need a fresh face at the helm.

I do not look forward to officiating games with that rule and do not envy NCAA refs who have to make those calls with much bigger and faster players
NCAA officials have the luxury of replay though, and still get it wrong most of the time. The HS officials are the ones that it tough.

Also, it blows my mind that anyone puts any stock in bowl records. The BCS bowls and the NCG game are the only ones that really matter. For most other teams, making a bowl game just gives them the opportunity to start practice for next year.

They haven't ever recovered from Tom Osborne retiring. Probably never will.

Since his last set of recruits cycled through I don't think they've even finished in the top 10 of the AP or coach's poll.

Perhaps but I believe all bowl games matter in terms of recruiting and national exposure. IMHO success in bowl games gives a conference national prominence going into the new season in terms of team positioning in the polls, etc.

That being said if you toss in Maryland and Rutgers the B1G is now 0-4 with losses to the ACC (7th place team combined), C-USA runner-up, Big 12 (5th place team), and an average Domers team.

yikes

So you think a recruit would choose OU if they had a great performance in the Beef O'Brady Bowl? Like I said, people only pay real attention to BCS games and the NCG.

I think a recruit who gets passed over by BCS schools would certainly want to pick a mid-major program that consistently participates in and better yet wins bowl games.

The Cornhuskers have won 8 or more games 9 times since Osborne's last class left. That tells me they were close, but are just like 10% shy of being in contention each year. 10 wins on a consistent basis is going to have you in the BCS discussion in an AQ conference.

I think recruiting nationally is a tougher task NOW at Nebraska, even if they find the right coach. They used to dominate recruiting and had "ins" on every coast.

70 teams made it to bowl games this year, it's not that difficult to do. Out of the 35 bowls, maybe 10 of them have a little prestige to them.

But non-bcs schools only get crappy games. Sure ANY bowl game may matter for those schools, but non new years day or bcs games for bcs schools are nothing more than a vacation and an exhibition game

Full speed it looked like his helmet caught him right under the face mask and it was about as violent as you can get.....with it being a QB, I can't fathom that not ever getting called again.

Yeah the defender basically hit him with the crown of his helmet under his chin
Surprised targeting wasn't called. Thomas was defenseless and the defender used the crown of his helmet
