Anyone see this on 60 Minutes? It's a new delivery system they hope to have in place in the next 4-5 years. Basically will deliver packages under 5lbs within 10 miles of a Fulfillment Center using an electric drone. Seems pretty out there, but would be really cool as well.

I saw that ,too.
Pretty sweet. I'm sure a lot of people would shoot them out of the sky though.

Not a chance.Classyposter58;1546141 wrote:Would cripple UPS if they do this
The only benefit drones may have would be delivering over night envelopes in an urban area.
Drones would be extremely slow, delivering only one package at a time.
Guarantee the big brown truck driving from stop to stop would still be quicker than a drone.

Unless we are talking totally automated drones, I'm not seeing the economic benefit here

I doubt it, these things will likely have gps and probably video feeds as well. And it will certainly be a felony to shoot them down seeing as they're going to need FAA approval to fly. Plus they're talking about using them in urban environments, not in the boonies where everyone hunts birds.SportsAndLady;1546139 wrote:I saw that ,too.

Fuck those things. Sounds like Amazon just trying to get their name in the news. People will for sure steal the drones and the packages and what's going to happen when these things fuck up and start randomly falling out of the sky and landing on people?
Prime is free 2 days shipping, do you honestly need something that much sooner? It'd look like locust in the sky.

I was with 2 people watching this yesterday, both legally own guns, and both said "I would shoot those things down if I saw them hovering over me" almost immediately.

5 pounds and under makes up 86% of Amazon's outgoing packages.Classyposter58;1546180 wrote:Yeah I forgot to see the 5 pounds and under. Just depends how many warehouses they are able to build
These things would have a 10 mile radius reach from a fulfillment warehouse, which are strategically placed around the most amount of people.

And I'm sorry, I'm not paying 80 bucks just to get shit in 2 days. I've ordered stuff with prime and it took longer than without it. It's not worth it.

To each his own. We've ordered stuff and it has been here within one day, but also the opposite. Having prime makes us go to Amazon a lot more when we need something, instead of going to the store. The closest Wal-Mart is 20 miles away, so it makes it a lot more convenient. If I had a Wal-Mart down the road, things would be different.

This is definitely one of those things that people say but would never do. I'm not saying that it wont ever happen but unless your friends are fucking retarded they wouldn't do it.SportsAndLady;1546209 wrote:^This.

I order from Amazon because it's cheap and reputable. Usually normal shipping from them is less than 4-5 days anyway and I have only paid shipping twice. Spend 35 and it's free anyway.ernest_t_bass;1546223 wrote:To each his own. We've ordered stuff and it has been here within one day, but also the opposite. I bought a Kindle Fire on Amazon last month, and it came on the 2nd business day. And I don't have Prime. It was awesome

Pretty much everything I have ordered from Amazon has come within 4 days. If you need something quicker than that, IMO, go to the damn store.SportsAndLady;1546229 wrote:I bought a Kindle Fire on Amazon last month, and it came on the 2nd business day. And I don't have Prime. It was awesome

I get it free with my EDU email, but even if I had to pay for it i would. I've saved more than 80 on shipping because we've bought larger items, like furniture, on amazon.wildcats20;1546218 wrote:It is not.

I also use it for the streaming.

Amazon will never use drones. This nonsense of Amazon using drones is just an attention getter.
What is the premium cost to have a drone deliver vs. ordering overnight and having ups/fed ex/usps deliver the next day?
Would a drone deliver 24/7? If not 24/7 delivery, at the best you may save a few hours going with drone delivery.
It would have to take hours for Amazon to process an order and load a drone for delivery.
Large cities would need many drones to be quicker than a truck which holds hundreds of packages and can deliver them all within a few hours.
They are not exactly small...
(*edit) found pic from Amazon. They are helicopters.
