But seriously. The worst. Very small office here (just him, his son, and me), so it's basically impossible to not have a relationship. I try to keep it professional, but he takes it very personally that we are not "close" or "family-like" and that we do not do more activities outside of work.

Absolutely not. He's been there 2 years and still knows nothing. He took over our shift about a year ago. Whenever you go to him with a problem that he needs to solve it's always "well, what would you have done before?" From my experience, it is better to keep your relationship with a boss on a strictly professional level. Friendly conversation in the context of working is fine. But becoming friends and socializing together caries a lot of risk. It's not a guaranteed problem, but the odds are high that it can be. I've tried it both ways. When a "friend" boss ends up making a decision that I don't like, I have felt pissed at the "friend". Then I have to remind myself, "This is your bosss; you shouldn't have put yourself in the postion of being upset>"

My boss and I have a pretty good relationship. Never really gone out for drinks or anything but did do dinner once with her and my wife. She always says we need to go to a minor league hockey/baseball game but haven't yet. We do some small talk here and there as well. She has been really helpful in teaching me stuff to help me move up.
Sadly she won't be my boss much longer as she is moving up in our corporate office.
As for your situation S&L I like you handled it best. Hopefully your GF is ok.

My boss and I are pretty decent friends. We both are U of Akron engineering grads and still go to a lot of Akron games and events. He's from Medina and we'll be tailgating for the Massillon- Medina highland game at Akron U tonight. People say I'm his pet since he usually talks to me but it doesn't bother me.

Our work environment is professional, but everyone is pretty close. We have to support each other here...if not, it would be miserable.
We are all in it together, so we understand if one of us is succeeding/failing the rest of us do the same. It's best if we are all working together to succeed.
My boss is cool. I am glad I have the chance to work with him in my first full-time career opportunity. He had to fire his best friend one day...that would suck. But his boss gave him the order to fire, tough place to be in.

That's fucking crazy.
Since I've graduated college all 3 of my bosses have been woman and they have been great. 1st was just a manager working nights at Kroger. But the other 2 have been in the corporate world and they were both in the military so maybe that's helped.

In the situation of being too close with a boss and going out for drinks, I definitely think it could be a problem. I wouldn't want to put myself in a position to say/do something stupid or have that person take something i say wrong. This is extremely bush league on his bosses part. had a buddy who went out for drinks with the gm and regional gm and then got drunk and talked poorly of his direct manager performance and got fired the next day. apparently they were close friends with his direct supervisor lol

I just hate how passive aggressive they are about everything. I worked(past tense) with a guy who was clearly incompetent and never did any work; and any work he did do was absolute shit. I went to her and told her that his poor performance was dragging the team down and I had to work extra in order to keep everything running smoothly. So she called a meeting with the team and went over what everyone was working on and when she got to the guy she never pressed into him about the clear disparity between the work he was doing vs. the work everyone was doing. She ended up leaving the company and was replaced by a male and within 2 weeks the new supervisor fired the guy.Automatik;1536168 wrote:THIS!!!
