Keeping with that theme, I'd add Anderson Arena to the list. In the two-row wooden bleachers behind the north basket. It was the best place to watch a high school tournament game in the state. That place really did roar.

Orr cares too much about the high school program, too. I've heard it's one of the reasons that Vaughn left. I've also heard (from 2nd person), that legendary Paul Wayne was offered the BGHS coaching job, but he turned it down b/c he heard Orr had too much control of the program. The right hires for mid-majors is the enthusiastic coach who wants to get to the big stage. You might only have him for 5 years, but at least your program wont be stagnant...

I know Paul personally, and he is a good friend. The Wayno you describe is the Wayno of rumors. While he did run a slow-down pace (at times), he also was willing to score when he had his horses. What most people don't realize, is that the "slow down" of the game came mostly from his tenacious defense. The incredible thing about Wayno was the assessment he gave of his own talent. He put his kids in a position to WIN every single year. There are a lot of his teams who would have drastically underperformed had they been with any other program, b/c of the lack of actual basketball talent that they had. If they weren't good, he taught them to play a certain way, that would put them in a position to be competitive and win games. I do agree that Wayne is a legend, though. He won and he won big (figuratively, of course, as his teams normally scored about 8 points). I saw Paul at one of my little sister's high school games a couple of years ago over at Holgate and chatted with him for awhile. Nice guy. I told him it was great seeing him coach down at the state tournament all those years, but that it would have been more entertaining if he had brought his teams with him. He laughed. Holgate, if you'll remember, was notorious for snail-paced basketball and set a boy's state tournament record for fewest points in a quarter against Webster in 2004 with 0. SMH.

Yeah, I was definitely feeding into the common stereotype of Paul Wayne with my above post. I probably saw Holgate play somewhere between 10 and 15 times when he was at the helm of the Tigers and can definitely attest to the fact that he seemed to get every last drop of talent out of his players, which is the ultimate testament of a great coach and what separates the good from the great at the high school level. You have to play with what you are given. IIRC, I typed something along the lines of: There's a lot of "good" places in Ohio, but nothing that leaps out at me. Most of my favorite memories of going places occurred in other states.
