Yes the perils are real, making it not a cinch to pull off, but nevertheless I am a big supporter of the slide for safety and and being able to make the play with minimal risk of injury. Also it is a great way to start reversing your momentum like the SS on the play in the hole, on a run away from the infield to pick up the ball and get it back in, and I saw just this week a runner rounding first thinking about going to 2nd, but putting on the brakes by sliding and getting back to 1B quickly.

If I were a coach, I think I'd have a drill where there would be a runner on first, the ball laying ~40' behind 2nd base, a defender on 2B, and blow a whistle to start the action and see if the defender could throw out the runner at 2nd on a tag play by a 3rd player. It would them out giving good practice on sliding into 2nd, tagging, and executing the slide play to quickly get the ball back in, and throwing to a tag play.

Leake couldn't pull another miracle on that ball that Izturis was able to save the run on.
