How does she make money? Without a SSN she can't have a job unless she is giving bee jays in the woods.O-Trap;1477047 wrote:Are you looking to eventually be completely off-grid?
I have a friend who has almost done this. Her electricity is completely through solar, wind, and water. They don't have gas, but a well-insulated, small home with a wood-burning stove. They pay rent to a guy with wooded property under the table. Their mail goes to a PO Box. She even found some way (which I didn't know was possible) to get rid of her SSN.
She uses a computer in restaurants and other establishments, and she does have a phone (albeit paid for with a fake identity and an untraceable VCC). Those, plus her rent, are her only expenses. All things considered, I believe she said she has about $200 in expenses a month.
Not too shabby.

Sounds like BS and/or she has something to hide.

Not sure, but I know she grows and makes a lot of what she eats.
Eh, more like she's an extreme hippy flower child.dlazz;1477281 wrote:Sounds like BS and/or she has something to hide.

To be honest, she sounds more like an extreme serial killer. If she ever asks you to join "The Family," you should probably sever ties.O-Trap;1477755 wrote:Eh, more like she's an extreme hippy flower child.
Although, I do admire people who are so self-sufficient and resourceful.

Well, if she is, then she's really good at keeping her cover.reclegend22;1478395 wrote:To be honest, she sounds more like an extreme serial killer. If she ever asks you to join "The Family," you should probably sever ties.

I don't think it's a communal thing, though it could be a few "homes." I know it's her and a few other people living in the one place.

Hippy flower child. Reminds me of the girls who live in the tree in Without a Paddle.O-Trap;1477755 wrote:Not sure, but I know she grows and makes a lot of what she eats.

How can she not have a SSN? Is that even legal, to be considered a citizen?O-Trap;1478401 wrote:Well, if she is, then she's really good at keeping her cover.

At any rate, she does sound like she has an interesting story behind her.

As I understand it, it's expensive to separate yourself from your SSN.ernest_t_bass;1478477 wrote:How can she not have a SSN? Is that even legal, to be considered a citizen?
Some children, however, are never given one. Yes, it is legal.

I am pretty sure you do not have to "register" your child with the govt. If you don't, they do not get a birth certificate, SSN, etc.O-Trap;1478808 wrote:As I understand it, it's expensive to separate yourself from your SSN.

I believe this is correct, but I'm not sure. It's a pretty new concept to me.

I'm not aware of any requirement to have a SSN, but one can't legally earn income without reporting it, which requires one.

No. They are naturally born citizens. Having a SSN is not what makes you a citizen.
Eh, but if you do, how is anyone really going to know? Especially if you're employed as an IC.queencitybuckeye;1478947 wrote:I'm not aware of any requirement to have a SSN, but one can't legally earn income without reporting it, which requires one.

Aren't those who hire ICs required to 1099 them?O-Trap;1479181 wrote:No. They are naturally born citizens. Having a SSN is not what makes you a citizen.

I believe it's possible to apply for a tax ID without having a Social Security Number.
As I understand it, this is indeed true of most Amish.Classyposter58;1479189 wrote:Amish people don't have an SSN

Happy to help. I actually had to ask a cousin-in-law. He hasn't gotten SSNs for any of his kids, which he's apparently proud of.Con_Alma;1479202 wrote:I see. Thanks.

He's kind of missing out on 18 years of tax deductions per kid by not doing so.
Maybe he doesn't care.

I asked about that. He said he doesn't mind, and that it's more important to him that his kids have the chance to choose.Con_Alma;1479205 wrote:He's kind of missing out on 18 years of tax deductions per kid by not doing so.
