Is that supposed to make me feel any better? What about when it randomly crashes and it needs a reboot?justincredible;1474532 wrote:As long as the site is still supporting itself it isn't getting shut down.

Sure hope you have a couple of boys to help with the chores around the farm there Mr Ingles. Goodluck with it. Long hours, susceptible to the weather and such. I know my whole garden was wiped out by the windstorm about a week ago and shit like that can just plain ruin ya for awhile.

I couldn't homestead like you are planning. However, I am in the process of buying a place in the country with 4 acres, and will absolutely be more reliant on that land for food. Obviously a garden, but also plan to raise beef, pigs and chickens. Doing it mostly for the hobby of it...it's what I was raised doing and I enjoyed it then. Teaches a lot of good lessons and responsibility to the kids, and there is definite satisfaction gained from doing it.

Well, it will reboot itself after a while now. Or I can give someone else the keys to the server to fix it when something happens. Chill out a bit, I'm not moving for a couple years yet.Scarlet_Buckeye;1474534 wrote:Is that supposed to make me feel any better? What about when it randomly crashes and it needs a reboot?

Shoot me your plan when you figure it out. We need to figure ours out.justincredible;1474530 wrote:Some lettuces, cabbages, beets, carrots, turnips, and probably some beans. I haven't planned it out completely yet but will hopefully have a better idea after this weekend.

This is how I will start. But I want/need a much larger piece of land. At this point I'm thinking a minimum of 50 acres but I'd love to find something in the 100-125 acre range. The farm I grew up on (grandparent's) is 126 acres and it is the perfect piece of land.WebFire;1474536 wrote:I couldn't homestead like you are planning. Why not take over their land, and work it for them?

No way. A small minority might adopt this to sustain and avoid the government. The majority if Americans will continue either work for the man or collect welfare until all of the producers leave and join Dagny Taggart in Galt's Gulch.queencitybuckeye;1474531 wrote:Which is fine, but in the context of this topic, the future is going to look more and more like the past. The days of working for others is on its way out in favor of individuals figuring out ways to take care of themselves.

Well, my grandpa died in 1999. And my grandma still raises cattle at age 78. I don't see her giving up the land anytime soon.ernest_t_bass;1474545 wrote:Why not take over their land, and work it for them?

I would definitely like to move to a bigger piece of land to have a garden and raise animals for harvest, but no thanks to full on homesteading.

If you need a somewhat creepy guy to live in a shack out back to do odd jobs and scare off intruders, let me know!justincredible;1474472 wrote:Homesteading, living off the land, whatever you want to call it. Could you do it? Would you do it if you could?
It's taken a while but I finally have my wife on board to move to a farm in the next couple years and she actually seems to be looking forward to it. I likely would keep a regular job for the first few years, at least on a part-time basis, but within the first few years I am hoping to quit working a day job and farm/homestead full-time.

I'm not necessarily talking about her giving it up, but why not go live with her, and help her out? You could buy the farm from her, but it's still "hers" until she passes. Right there is your "practice" as well.justincredible;1474552 wrote:Well, my grandpa died in 1999. And my grandma still raises cattle at age 78. I don't see her giving up the land anytime soon.

Then talk to your uncle about it. This is a serious life change you're looking for. Hell give your uncle a cut, or something like that. I seriously think you should look into it as your first option, until you get a definite "no."justincredible;1474587 wrote:I would absolutely be down for this but I am pretty sure my uncle has first dibs.

With that much land you should buy this to cut your grass.

It's something to consider, for sure. At the same time, I think I'd prefer to be on my own as there would be no potential for conflict over the "business."ernest_t_bass;1474591 wrote:Then talk to your uncle about it.
