My best friend up in Chicago does a lot of biking in the city. Last time I was up there we rode to one of his friends houses for a party. It was my first time on a bicycle in at least 15 years and it was pretty fun. A little shaky at first, but didn't take long to get the hang of it. Now I am thinking about buying one for myself and my wife. There are a lot of neighborhoods and parks around the city that are a little too far to walk to but it's not always convenient to drive.

It sounds like you're talking just leisure biking as opposed to road biking/racing or mountain biking. It is nice to have a bike especially if there are roads designed to support cyclists and/or bike paths to get around. It's a great way to get your metabolism up a bit and just get some easy healthy exercise and still get out to go places.

I am looking to buy a used bike here in the next couple of months just for that purpose. I've just been using one of my parents old racing bikes and have changed out the pedals for the special shoes for traditional/normal pedals.

Edit:

If you're going to bike in the road, make sure you know the "rules." Don't think just because you're on a bike you can be on the road when it's convenient and then run red lights and act like a pedestrian crossing a cross walk when it's convenient. That's the kind of shit that makes people want to bash you with a car door.

I'm thinking of signing up for Chicago's new bike sharing program (just launched today) for weekend/quick rides: http://divvybikes.com/. $75/year, unlimited 30-minute or less rides. Only thing I need to wait for is them to open up a station closer to my house (which they're planning on doing soon).

I like to bike, I just have no friends here who have a bike. Thinking about changing the tires to my mountain bike to make it more city friendly though. Anyone have any suggestions?

I've been scouring craigslist lately looking for deals. I've found some decent looking bikes for under $100.

I switched from mountain to road tires (1.5") years ago on my mountain bike. Buy new rims and keep the mountain rims for switching back and forth.

Didn't realize you could get tires that thin placed on a mountain bike.

I would love to, but I have a really boney ass, and it makes bike riding long distances tough.

Do you use the shorts with the padding?

A combination of those and just "getting used to it" and you'll eventually ignore it. I know when I started biking even after a 20mile/60 minute ride my ass would hurt. But after building it up I could easily do 100miles+ and not have an issue beyond normal muscle fatigue.

Big into biking. I ride least 20 miles road biking every weekend, usually more than that. I also sometimes ride to work, might start doing it full time if the BART (public train system) goes on strike like they're threatening.

when i lived downtown in the city I had a single sped but now that I live in norcal with hills I got a geared road bike. It's awesome.

Seems like you're pretty srs about biking. What bike did you get and how much did you drop on it? There are some expensive fucking bicycles on the market.
