Need new vehicle, doesn't have to be fancy. It does need to be an SUV or hatchback with a back that is large enough to fit a couple of suitcases with a 60 lb. dog, as well as a second row of seats that can hold a baby carrier. But can't be too big since we have to parallel park on the street. So in other words bigger than a Honda CRV/Toyota RAV 4, smaller than a Yukon/Explorer.

Suggestions?

Working at a Chrysler dealer, the Dodge Journeys have been a pretty solid smaller suv. So are the Grand Cherokee or Wranglers. I have a 4 door Jeep Wrangler and wouldn't trade it for anyting. Love it. I guess it all depends on your price range.

What's your price? If money isn't a huge concern i'd say an X5. Has the option for 3rd row seating, comfortable, and pretty quick depending on the engine you get. My brother in law has one and it's a lot of fun to drive and has tons of room. Not to mention it's a BMW so it has lots of options, very cool car.

X5 is too big - a big issue is the parking thing. Even the X3 might be a little too big. We need something with a lot of indoor space, but not much outdoor space.

I really, really don't want to get a minivan.

My friend has a Mitsubishi Outlander and loves it. More of a Compact SUV style
Jeep Compass are also nice..

Look at Compact SUV

I think you live in NY or Chicago right.. parking is a problem with bigger SUV
I know when I go to Chicago in my extended cab truck it's a bitch to park... We make the trip early in the morning so we get to Chicago when people are leaving for work to get a place to park on the street..

I have a Nissan Rogue. It has a 360 cam and is easy as hell to parallel park. No 3rd row seating but the space in the back holds a lot. Decent gas milage too, getting about 25mph highway. It's not fast by any means but it's a smooth ride and handles well.

What's the wheelbase/length on the Edge? I know that it has a great reputation but isn't it about the same size of the X5? We'd like to keep the length in the 170-180 inch range. Otherwise parking is going to be a nightmare, it already is with our piece of crap company car.

The Honda Pilot's are pretty nice, and have a 3rd row of seats you can fold down. Might be too large for your purpose tho, but comes standard with backup camera which would help.

As far as I know, Mitsubishi has fallen off the map. I wouldn't buy a car from a company that's focusing on alternative energy cars.

Jeep Compass = POS.

^^^

184 is really pushing it, I'm having trouble with our crap company car which is around 160, I'll see if we can test drive an Escape.

Also - Mazda CX5. We had a 2003 Mazda 6 and put 275K on it in 7 years. They're great cars and super reliable.

For cheap hatchbacks I'd look at the Mazda 3 and Honda Fit

My truck is 247 inches. I'm guessing I'd have a hard time finding a space there huh? lol

You'd take up the entire block.

My wife used to drive a Mazda CX-9. They don't even sell it outside of North America because it is so large. I hate parallel parking anyway, I almost failed my driver's test in a Honda Civic.

Toyota 4 Runner sounds like your best fit....looks, reliability and it's a Toyota.

Mazda has a sharp looking vehicle maybe in your size range.
