Ive said all year, I like Stubbs as the #9 hitter. From that spot, I dont really care if he hits .230 as long as he provides defense, speed and some pop...which he has.

Agreed, but I am still scared shitless every time he bats with a runner on third with less than 2 outs...lol

Stubbs has also not grounded into a double play all year. Speed kills

...it's nearly impossible to double up Stubbs...which is why I am less 'worried' when there are less than 2 out.

Stubbs' BA has been creeping up, too...hitting over .240 now, and the RBI's are moving up steadily too. I really like seeing him coming to the plate, because I know if he gets on, there is some potential to the inning.

I agree. I also think Bourn needs a break from leading leading off...Druby maybe?

eh, I think we know how streaky this team is, so I would just stick with him...he will be fine. I think he is still batting near .300 anyhow.

the only thing that I disagree with is that you make it seem like the 9 hole isn't that important in the batting order. It is. 9-1-2 are your inning starters at the turn of the order.

I have never agreed with this line of thinking. I don't believe in putting a decent hitter at 9 for that reason.

But, whatever, a win is a win.

^^^Hmmm...as a coach for 20+years at several levels, when I get a team together, that is the first thing I figure out....9-1-2. If you have an 'automatic out' or some slow guy in the 9 hole, it can really clog things up when the lineup turns over....As for who leads off when Bourn is being rested...Stubbs...he's your secondary leadoff hitter...and there isn't a coach in the league that would do it any differently.

And that's why I think it's BS that Kazmir can throw a gem, Smith can come in and blow it, Tribe scores a couple of runs, and Smith gets the win? That's like giving your puppy a treat after it pisses on your carpet. Such a crappy rule. They need to change it...somehow.

^^^^no different then the guy who hits a laser shot to deep centerfield and the CF runs it down for an out...the next time up he takes an 'excuse me swing' and hits a nubber that turns into an infield hit. Baseball is a game of averages. Sometimes you get a win when you don't deserve one, other times you pitch a gem and get no credit...or worse. Over a course of a 162 game season...it all averages out.

^^^understood but I just don't like where the scrub reliever who drops the "Tootsie Roll" in the pool comes out smelling like a rose with a "W." Perhaps don't reward the starter with a win but for godsake, don't give the reliever, who blew it, a win when the offense bails him out in their half of the inning.

Yea, it seems like there should be a stat for that (ie a "hold") as there is for pretty much everything else.

I want my best hitters to get the most at bats. That is why I would put the worst hitter at 9. To me, 9-1-2 is over-thinking. Putting a decent hitter at 9 shorts you of a decent stick later in the game. IMHO, of course! :D

Yeah, give me the best hitters out of the #9 hole. Over the course of the year, #9 gets the fewest ABs. I like that.

Stubbs is the ideal #9 though, cause along with a bad average, he will at least bring defense, speed and power.

Hits is right. Your #9 hitter turns the line up over. With the top of the line up hitting after him, it just makes sense. You want someone there with the ability to get on base. And, preferably, someone with speed. He's a perfect fit. And I believe they showed a stat last night that with a runner on third and less than 2 outs he has scored the runner home 8 out 11 times. I'll take those odds every time.

Nobody puts the "best" hitters in the 9 hole....you just don't want to put the worst. The 'worst' goes in the 8th spot. That's not rocket science, that's standard. The guy in the 9th spot should be a decent hitter with lead off speed and lead off skills (bunting)...good OBP is a bonus. You have got to have speed at 9-1-2. That's why Stubbs is perfect for this team in the 9th hole. If he raises his batting average up to .275...on this team, he'll still hit 9th.

^^^You are not going to piss me off, BRF. I love talking baseball and strategy. But Royal is correct...I am right;) I'd explain why in more detail, but not enough time right now.

In Tribe news today...roster in motion.
Chris Perez was activated and will be available for tonite's game.
Johnny Mac was traded to Philly for the PTBNL.
