Going to be a different type of Open because of the weather. Should have some fairly low scores.

Sadly they are going to make this course look like a pitch and putt given the amount of rain it has gotten.
This course was wildly short to begin with and needed ideal conditions to make it as fast and firm as possible to protect itself. It is another in a long line that have been made obsolete by technology.
The USGA is going to have a heart attack this week I suspect with the scores these guys will post on a short damp track.

Merion is playing only 6,996 yards this year.
Olympic last year was considered short at 7,150.
2 years ago Congressional came in at 7,574 which is more the norm.

Olympic was only 150 yards longer and no one could break par. I don't think anyone will be lower than -5 or -6

Maybe the lack of practice rounds will offset the rain soaked greens.

It's pretty amazing to watch what these guys are capable of when you know how hard the game actually is.robj55;1455861 wrote:Who in the hell can watch golf? Playing it I can understand.

Understandable, doesn't make it any less boring though or add more drama to it really.se-alum;1455869 wrote:It's pretty amazing to watch what these guys are capable of when you know how hard the game actually is.

Totally agree with this, I few years ago I hated when people turned on golf, now that I have started to play, I can watch it all the time. It's crazy just how good they are at something that is very difficult.se-alum;1455869 wrote:It's pretty amazing to watch what these guys are capable of when you know how hard the game actually is.
Given the conditions It should be fun to watch since they will have to be very aggressive to keep up with what could be a crazy pace.

They said Phil didn't get back to Phill until 5:30 this morning. Granted he owns his own plane with a bed on it and all so it is not like he was flying coach, but that still wasn't likely to be a restful night flying to California and back then having an 8:00 am tee time.
After bogeying his first hole this seemed ripe for things to totally go the other way for him considering how poorly he has played opening rounds in the majors the past few years.
He actually left some out there despite his 67, as I thought he was going to stuff it in there to get to -4 on his last hole. Only had 70 yards on his 2nd and was coming off a nice birdie.

Still a very impressive -3 IMO. Especially with his decision to fly out to Cali and back.
Tiger with a bogey at 1, follows it up with nice birdie on 2.

In one of those "makes you feel old moments" Dan Hicks on NBC pointed out that the daughter he went back to see graduate from 8th grade was the one born the day after the 99 U.S Open that Phil lost to Payne Stewart.Still a very impressive -3 IMO. It is hard to believe that was 14 years ago, because I still remember watching that with them making the point that Phil had the beeper in the bag in case his wife went into labor and he was ready to leave immediately even if it was during a round.
