They should have backed off and tried to talk to the young man. This could have been a big turning point in his life. Cops went all Rambo on him and he never had a chance.

lol, with the slight exception that when the cops started hassling with Rambo, he won. This dumbass wasn't able to bring the goods First-Blood-style and paid the price.
