This is great. The threadis "Does anyone still go to high school football games?" NCF's reply...
"I still go on Friday and Sat, but usually catch a live game on TV, from Ohio.
With so many live games on TV I use the DVR to record as many as possible and watch them. A lot of teams are from other states, which adds to the list of teams I have been able to watch.
I make one or two trips to Kentucky to see teams play I know and to see old friends.
I usually get to all but one of the Newark Catholic games. Even though I did not go there, I still root for them.
To make it clear why I root for them I will post both reasons again, knowing it will tick off a few(not that I gives a rats @@@)
First reason-My brother played football at Lakewood in 8th grade and he missed one practice, when we all were called home because they thought my late father was going to die, that day.. Forward to the last game of the season against Newark Catholic,(Whomever they would have been playing I would have rooted for, it just turned out to be Newark Catholic) the score was something like 42-0, and my brother still had not played one play of any game. When he said to the coach"I have been here for every practice but one because I was called home because they thought my dad was going to die, and that was very early in the season. And with the score being what it is I can't hurt us" The coach said no you have missed to many practices to play in a game. My brother repeated himself to the coach and the coach again said no. My brother strips down to his shorts tells the coach muck you and you pick up the uniform yourself. He then walked across the field and stood on Newark Catholic's side and rooted for Newark Catholic. that was football season 81, the year I graduated, after that both of us have rooted for N.C.
#2- The doctors called the family in and told them I most likely was not going to make it, and they should say their goodbyes now. That was 15 years ago or so. When I woke up and after the doctors knew I was going to be OK, the doctor who did all three surgeries on me asked me if he could ask me a question. I said sure you saved my life ask me anything. He asked something like when you were not with us what was you thinking about or dreaming about. I SAID DOC FOOTBAL SEASON IS COMING AND I HAVE TO GO WATCH NEWARK CATHOLIC and cheer for the Cowboys on TV. His reply was , son that has a lot to do with you making it back. I asked why? He said if you have a love for something that strong and you are that passionate about it drove your body to fight that much harder. He said most people do not have anything in their life they love that much."
