Is that the "indefinitely" according to Pitino's Dictionary? If so, expect Embiid at about the 17-minute mark of the first half of Friday's quarterfinal game.

Based on Self's comments, Emiid will at most miss a few minutes of the Big XII Tournament. He indicated that Embiid's condition is not one that would worsen with continued play, and that Kansas would likely not play him at all the rest of the season if that were a possibility.

I get the impression that there is no way Embiid will miss the NCAA Tournament, and will probably even play in the later rounds of the Big XII if he does in fact sit out the first game.

@SportsCenter: THIS JUST IN: Kansas C Joel Embiid likely to miss 2 more weeks (back). The Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year averages 2.6 blocks per game.

@YahooForde: Joel Embiid stress fracture confirmed by California specialist, per KU release. Out indefinitely. That's depressing.

@GaryParrishCBS: Joel Embiid won’t play in the Big 12 tournament and might not return until at least the Sweet 16. Story: http://t.co/TLgY6pW03f

In that case, then it's very unfortunate news for Kansas.

Unlike some other teams over the years who have lost key players in the last couple of weeks of the season and still regrouped to win or reach national championships, I'm not sure it would be as easy for Kansas to compensate for the loss of a talent like Embiid if the Jayhawks were to not have him back by the Sweet 16. He and Wiggins compliment each other very well and that balancing act is what makes Kansas so potentially dangerous.

KU's fucked without Embiid.

You need a defensive presence like him to make a run in March.

FUCK FUCK FUCK

Reading more about the decision, sounds like it is very likely that embiid will never play a game for Kansas again.

Sounds like his people "won out" and made the decision not to chance anything. Can't blame him or them at all. Just sucks as a fan.

I mean he has a stress fracture in his back.

No offense to Kansas and college basketball, but I wouldn't be playing either.

Oh absolutely not. I'm not saying he should be playing.

But he was cleared by 3 doctors. He then flew to LA to seek advice from a back specialist and all of a sudden there's a back fracture.

That sucks for everybody, not just Embiid and Kansas. I agree that he's gotta do what's best for his future. No question. But that takes some air out of the NCAA Tournament, at least for me, with one of the major favorites being essentially neutralized before the thing even starts. Damn.

There were so many great story lines and games that could've involved Kansas. I mean, Bill Self is one of the best there is, but as S&L said he's pretty much fucked if Embiid is done for good.

Gonzaga beats St. Mary's to advance to 17th straight conference championship game. That doesn't even seem real.

SMC sucks this year. The final will be a much better game, especially considering BYU has won 10 of 11 including an 8-point win over Gonzaga 2 weeks ago.

Gonzaga -6.5 was a lay down. I'm liking BYU tonight though. I don't see a spread yet...

Great game. Thought it might go 2OT, but glad it didn't cause I would've slipped into a coma afterward and never woke up this morning.

Can't wait for the real action to start tomorrow night with the big conferences starting play.

UW-Milwaukee has looked really good in the Horizon tournament. They have a pair of three-point shooters in Jordan Aaron and Austin Arians with in-the-gym range that, while not great percentage guys, are very dangerous when hot. Aaron knocked one down earlier from about 28 feet. Tough to guard. If they win tonight, it'd be fun to see those guards take on perimeter-centric Nova as a 16 seed. While they wouldn't win, a pair of potent shooters like that might make it interesting for awhile.

Wright State has some great shooters of its own, though, and are making a comeback.

Another 1 seed in trouble. Mt St Mary's up 16 on Robert Morris at half.

It is crazy how many quality one seeds have lost their conference tournaments this season. Florida Gulf Coast, Vermont, Davidson, Iona, Green Bay and Belmont. All of those teams would have been popular sleeper picks on the brackets of many. Particularly Green Bay and Belmont.

Milwaukee edges out Wright State for a bid. They are red hot right now.

The Panthers are going to make for a dangerous 16 seed if that's the line they end up on. Maybe not against the overall size and athleticism of Arizona or Florida, but Milwaukee has the requisite arsenal of shooters and just enough size to potentially put a scare into a team like Nova or Duke or Syracuse or Wichita State.

The officiating in the WSU game was hilariously bad. It wasn't even lopsided, just flat out bad.
