For teams that are actually capable of not getting embarrassed and at least feigning competitiveness, the exposure of playing at a big-time venue is probably pretty positive, even in a 20 or 30-point loss. But nowhere is a kid watching TV and saying, "I want to be a Firebird," after watching St. Kat's get beat by 80 by a West Coast Conference team.

It's about the school getting money. Which isn't all that bad, I guess. But it's demoralizing for team itself. JMO.
I don't think it would be that demoralizing. I'd say those kids are probably the same as me or you. I know I'd love to play in game against the likes of SDSU or Utah.

Also while I am in this thread let me say it again. Fuck You Providence.

Arizona beats Wazzou 60-25. Sounds like one of those games that you could use as a torture tactic...

SMU about to beat Connecticut. Cincinnati won at Memphis. There might not be a single top 15 team in the AAC, but it's a pretty decent league after being one that was just thrown together. 5 or 6 pretty good teams, and even UCF and USF are decent.

Duke loses to Notre Dame. That's a terrible loss. Ok State down to KSU late.

lol

Apparently Duke < appalling.

They were 9-4 and should have beaten undefeated OSU. Not a good loss, but not a "terrible" one. Especially on the road.

9-4 with 0 good wins. And losses to Indiana State and North Dakota State. And then they lost their best player to being a dumbass. That is not a good team.

Would be like if ohio state would have lost at Purdue.

Not yet, but I think ND will fall to under .500 by the middle of ACC season, and if they do, at that point itll be a really bad loss on Duke's schedule.

Exactly ND will probably be a tourney team. High ranked opponents always have trouble at ND that's why the Vegas line was only 5.5 points

You think? I think ND finishes around .500. We'll see.

Eh, it's no different than Michigan losing at Penn State last year. It happens. As I said in the betting thread, this loss was not surprising in the least, whether you want to believe it or not. Duke does this against an average team every year on the road, once or twice, even in its best of years. Losing at places like Miami under Frank Haith, Va Tech, Virginia, Boston College, St. John's, N.C State, Wake Forest, etc. Notre Dame, while not a good team by any measure, does have some individual players with talent and a tough home crowd backing them.

It's the Duke game. Every average team's biggest. It's something I came to peace with years ago.

Notre Dame is not a good team and even after beating Duke they will continue to not be a good team. A game against Duke or North Carolina has just a little bit more of a motivating factor behind it than one against North Dakota State. That's a reality.

I never said it wasn't a terrible loss. I am merely stating that it will have no bearing whatsoever on where Duke goes from here or what it can ultimately accomplish.

Pretty much the perfect comparison. In the short term, it's a terrible loss. In the grand scheme it won't mean anything unless the team goes into some unrealistic-seeming tailspin afterwards because by the end of the season, it's a lot harder to find good teams WITHOUT at least one surprising loss than it is to find ones with them.

But at least for today, it's a bad loss to a team that, due to losing one of their top players to academics immediately after Ohio State didn't lose to them, is likely destined to be mediocre to poor.

No one loss in college basketball, in the regular season, keeps a team from possibly reaching their goals. Some are just bad losses.

I'll bet anyone on here that ND doesn't go .500 in the ACC and will miss the NCAA's. I see them at best, 6th in the ACC.
All better

Duke gets a pass on this loss. Coach k was away from the team for a few days because his brother passed away the day after Christmas.

Krzyzewski was severely ill during the '94-95 season. He was hospitalized and bed-ridden for months. It was just a bit more serious than something that can be cured with a back rub.

This is true. K's brother did in fact die recently.

As for the game itself, Duke lost to a bad team. As said in this thread, it happens. Duke played about as horribly as it could have and, despite dreadful shooting overall as a team, arguably the nation's best player (Parker) scoring only 7 points, and being completely outmatched inside, the Blue Devils still had a chance to win on its final possession. Duke shot 42%. Without hot three-point shooting from Rod Hood and Quinn Cook, the team would've shot in the low 30s. Notre Dame, conversely, shot 50% from three and 53% overall. They had the hot hand and Duke couldn't keep up on this day.
