Wtf...so I needed to buy last minute plane tickets down to Florida, so I bought the cheapest ticket I could--Spirit Airlines.

Apparently, they charge outrageous fees to CARRY ON a bag. I'm looking at $100 at the gate EACH WAY to carry on a small bag for clothes for a few days.

Fucking bastards. Wish I would have investigated a little further before buying, I could have just paid an extra $20 and not paid any carry-on fees.

Spirit can GFT.

That's why they're so cheap (ticket-wise). Similar situation to Ryanair in Europe - their tickets are dirt cheap, but they will charge you for everything.

Yeah it's insane...I had no idea. I mean it was literally a difference of like, $15 bucks ($7.50 each way) to the next cheapest airline. Wish I would have known Spirit is so shady.

I'm also reading reviews saying they're incredibly rude/mean, the flight is packed and crowded, and the plane is dirty. Thankfully it's an hour and a half ride, but jesus.

Shame JetBlue doesn't do direct flights to Florida from Chicago. They are totally worth it IMO.

Yes, I've heard horror stories from Spirit.

Last August I went on a family vaca to Myrtle Beach, SC (shithole, I'm aware).

I flew separate, but my parents had a round trip via Spirit out of Latrobe, PA. On the return they "overworked" the crew or whatever and couldn't put a crew together for the flight back. The next available was in like 2 days, my dad and aunt had to be back to work. So after dealing with that BS at the airport, my dad was forced to rent a car and drive back 12 hours with my mom, gma, and 2 aunts. LOL. I wasn't there, but I can imagine he was fucking livid.

My friend here in NYC just went to Myrtle last week to golf. He was also bitching about the bag fees.

I also hear that they charge you $50 at the airport not to tow your car away.

Spirit is terrible. only 25% of their flights have reclining seats and there is NO leg room. Get there early, and pick your seat at a kiosk (get an exit...for the love of God get an exit). You can also pay for your bag at the kiosk for the 25$ carry-on fee.

I flew Spirit to NOLA about 2 months ago. There is no direct, so we have to go to Dallas, with about a 2:45 layover. We sit in the Detroit terminal for 3 hours because of an issue with the plane (so Spirits fault). We finally take off after moving gates 4 times watching other planes come and go. We are told not to change our arrangements because there are 27 people on this flight going onto NOLA, so they wont leave and will hold the flight for us in Dallas. 30 minutes before we land the stewardess says that, "Those continuing on to New Orleans will have to wait at the counter upon exiting the plane. Your connection is taking off in 10 minutes and you will miss it.". WTF???

Ok, so not only is this beyond inconceivable to me that an airline could be this incompetent...it then gets worse.

The manager comes out and says that there are no more flights to New Orleans until the same flight we just missed the next day. Who the FUCK is going to want to wait for 24 fucking hours??? Answer? No one. I quickly search other airlines and book a flight to Houston on United and then onto NOLA (thank the good lord I know how to use apps, cause these old people had no clue what they were doing and were on the phone and shit...). I talk to the guy and he says you can get the flight tomorrow and we will give you a 15$ food vouture for the airport and a hotel room for the night. No refund at all. I bitch my ass off and get all 27 of us a refund, but only on the portion of the flight from Dallas to Nola...which I finally had credited to my card for a whopping 24$ lol.

If you really want to hear about the way back...let me know. Its even worse.

The worst part of their airline is how shitty their customer service is. Not rude, but they certainly dont care about your problems and WILL NOT expense any of their money to compensate you. Even if they are the ones who fucked up. Thats the stuff that just pisses me off and why I wont fly with them again.

Yeah I haven't even flown them yet, and I'm already done with Spirit. Their CEO apparently does not give a fuck, though...he said this in an email that was uncovered:

IN general yes. I can't speak for Spirit but the major airlines let you do so....they also don't charge you to carry on a bag.

Spirit sucks. It's always a miserable flight, cramped and with absolutely no room to move. The last time I "flew" with them, my flight to Vegas was delayed three times after the first three jets broke down on their way to the terminal. After the third breakdown, I asked the lady at the gate if they had any hot-air balloons available. She -- a cocky black girl in her 20s -- said "Shit happens". WTF? Solid operation they got running. I went straight to the main Spirit counter and transfered to another carrier and flew to Denver that night (half-way to my final destination of Vegas) and got the fuck out of Detroit.

I normally don't have to worry about carrying bags on because most carriers allow one for free. What does Spirit consider a carry on? A wallet? Can you take a backpack on for free if it fits under your seat?

Yes, carry-on is the overhead compartments. But its still ridiculous to charge 100 for it.

But I want to say when flying one time with a friend of mine, they -- I believe it was Spirit at the time -- made a big deal about how his backpack was too big and that he would have to pay for it. Regardless, the airline is a joke. Unfortunately for Frontier Airlines, they are even worse than Spirit. Do not fly them either. You get what you pay for.

I've actually always liked Air Tran. While they are also sometimes more of an inexpensive choice, the experience has always been good for me.

LMAO, yeah, their model is not based on repeat business. Even without all the add-ons for everything, you wouldn't voluntarily fly Spirit a second time

$100 each way for a small bag? Srsly? Pack your stuff in a box and ship it FedEx or UPS to yourself.

Spirit might as well just quit their "we have the best value" ruse and just raise their prices back to normal. Travelers with a brain know that Spirit is simply tacking on hidden fees and that they are going to be paying the same as a flight with American Airlines regardless (for the most part).

There are many travelers, though, who leave their brains at home when they travel and believe they are really getting a great deal. Of course, you could also just pack accordingly and not take a carry-on.

If you are going for say 5 days could you just wear about 3 pair of pants, 3 shirts, 5 pair of socks and 5 pair of undies.....be hot as fuck but funny as fuck also, then buy the small stuff you need when you get there?

If it was just a day trip or you were flying to a vacation home maybe you get by without any bags. If you can afford a vacation home, you'd NEVER voluntarily fly Spirit.

Besides all the other stuff pointed out, the plane I was on was such a POS that for the first and only time I actually felt nervous flying commercial.

I think I remember reading something about their pilots, too...lowest paid and bottom of the barrel. Spirit is where new pilots go to get experience for a better job.

On a Spirit connecting flight from Toledo to Cleveland on my way to New York a few years back, the pilot had a close-cropped buzz cut, appeared to be about 13 years old and looked like he had just graduated from the Boy Scouts. It was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever come across when flying. It was a very scary flight, and I love flying and never think twice about dying. If I die, I die.

And their planes are all 20-30 years old or more - like as in when United gets rid of one of their POS, it's Spirit that buys it. Not the computerized/automated state-of-the-art stuff of newer planes you'd want backing-up an inexperienced pilot.
