We get back about $1500 from federal, largely because of my wife's grad school tuition. We owe a couple hundred to the state and to the city so we'll net about $800. Better than the $3k we owed a few years ago. Also, fuck you IRS. Just because.

Yeah, we're still paying on the $15,000 we owed last year. It was awful.

Haven't got a refund since 05, IRS garnishes it each time. Only around 3,200 left to pay and I'm free and clear.

My plan to do them today hit a snag, since the library is closed at 4 p.m. on Saturday apparently and I need to pick up a form or two (school district). Looks like I'll be a last-day-filer this year. Which is like it is most years.

TurboTax didn't say anything about my city tax, so I think I'll be OK.

Or be audited and go to jail.

No way, it has to be closer to 35%-40%. Sales tax alone is approx 6.5%.

It's worth it, though, because we have roads and shit.

Yes, but much of what one spends their money on is exempt, so the effective sales tax rate is far lower.

My effective fed and state tax rate was 1.11%. So much for the middle class paying all the taxes.

And it's not nearly enough.

But that's a major problem - everyone should feel the pain of govt excess, even if margina (and i'm not talking about social insurance)

Hopefully you live in some small city/village with no prosecution code & ordinances for residents who don't pay the tax.

Some small cities/villages send deliquent city taxes owed to a collection agency.

I use TurboTax every year. Great program, as no one in the country understands the tax code. Between two of my kids returns and my taxes, I still spent 6 hours putting it all together. When I printed my federal forms off, it was about 25 pages, had forms I never heard of, had calculations I never would have considered, and was confusing as hell to read. At the end of the day, I have absolutely no freakin idea if I did them correctly, lied, or was completely ignorant of the rules like Tiger Woods. Great system we have here. And next year, we have to deal with all of the ObamaKare bullshit on our tax forms. Super. Can't wait.
