I couldn't find the old thread, so I'm starting this.

Premiered last night, thoughts? Building up as always, but I thought it was a solid episode. I'm excited to see some dragons potentially fuck shit up.

This show never disappoints. I wish it was 2 hrs every week.

Normally all the different plot lines wouldn't work, but with a few exceptions the acting is just absolutely outstanding across the board. When you think about it, they have at least 4 active, in depth, story arcs. Shouldn't be hard to write for (especially when you have book as a guide).

The betrothed queen was awesome, by the way. Although I had to LMAO at her being such a bleeding heart liberal.

They do a great job of keeping the fantasy/mythology in the periphery. I kind of like it, but not sure how I'd feel about it being a focal point or more dominant feature.

Agreed, but enjoy it while it lasts. After book 3 fantasy/supernatural elements become more of a focus. Then again, this season and next season will take care of book 3 and if the series lasts beyond that it will likely stray from the books. IMO books 4 and 5 would be next to impossible to to film a direct adaptation. Just not enough happens, and what does happen is traveling, traveling, more traveling and a little bit of scheming.

Loved the episode Sunday night...so many different, perpetual story lines, the show could go so many different routes (I didn't read the books so please don't tell me how it's going to go).

I also want nothing to do w/ reading the books..I'll stick to Sunday nights at 9 lol

I want to read the books, but I've been holding off. I feel it will ruin the show.

You can read books 1 and 2 and it won't spoil anything - if anything it provides a lot more detail in the history of Westeros that makes the show even better. If you don't want spoilers definitely avoid the 3rd book, even though IMO it is by far the best of the series.

From what I understand HBO has unofficially requested the 4th season which will encompass the latter part of the 3rd book and maybe a bit of the last two in the series. But unless the producers go off tangent quite a bit there isn't enough material in the 4th and 5th books combined to make up a season.

10 episodes a year isn't enough.

The budget isn't enough either, but it as good as it's going to get. To do the story justice there would have to be a Lord of the Rings budget - and that ain't happening on cable tv. The producers have done an excellent job with the adaptation given the budget, near perfect casting decisions particularly with the Starks and Tyrion.

I actually like the show better than the books. Probably the first time I've ever thought this. I found the books a bit dull at times and hard to follow with all the characters. Prob in the minority on this.

There are differences where the film improved on the books - if nothing else the ages of the kids. In the books Arya is 9, Sansa is 12, and Jon/Robb/Joffrey are in the 13-15 age range, Dany is 13.

That wouldn't have translated well to the film, even if it is fantasy. That part, HBO got right.

I haven't watched the show due to not getting whatever channel its on, but recently bought the first four books to dig into after whatever day I finally finish Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson's Wheel of Time (note: 14 books averaging 800-900 pages might be a bit long for a series -- you think following this one is tough with all the characters; w/o the internet, I'd be completely lost with Wheel of Time..../1up'd).

Like MB said, the age adaption for TV was probably a positive. If for no other reason than to avoid the "uh what the hell" disturbing factor that would happen during the 458739047296543 times a character who's supposed to be 9-15 years old gets sexually assaulted. That probably wouldn't fly on TV lol.

Yeah GoT is the one show where they could go an entire episode of "nothing happening" and it's still great to watch. Last night was definitely one of those.

What were you confused on?

I'm just confused on what the fuck fucking Joffrey is going to do next lol

The whole Theon part. Who had him? Also, the part with Bran and the nerd and his sister finding them. There are just so many different stories going on its difficult to keep up.

Love Margaery though, I'm pretty sure she's just playing the shit out of dickhead Joff.

Im torn on margaery ...I feel like she has an evil side we just haven't seen it yet. But then again I could see her being the one to finally kill joffrey.

I wish they would have left Jojen and Meera out - even in the books they didn't come across well. There is a an important relationship with Howland Reed that they flesh out a bit, but otherwise they don't add much in the books. We'll see if they are treated differently in the tv adaptation.

Bran aged in real life about 4 years between seasons. The "8 year-old" talks like a man now.

Last night's show was slow and uneventful. But still very enjoyable to watch. I think that's what makes it great - the characters and acting are still compelling even when things drag. And visually the backdrop of where they film never hurts.

Crazy thing was I had almost forgotten about Bran, Theon and even Arya. It is getting a bit much with 10 1hr episodes...there's like 6 on-going plots and a few of those have split into secondary (tertiary?) plots.

I don't think there will be much with Bran going forward in this season unless they deviate heavily from the books. Perhaps a flashback or two but not much else.

I don't know where they are going (tv wise) with Jojen and Meera - will be very difficult to film from the books.
