I can hate michigan all I want, but I hate to hear any young athlete from any team that gets hurt. I hope he has a speedy recovery.

IF he made it back for the season, it would be the last few games. And you have to assume that wouldn't be 100%. Most are just assuming he is done for the season.

Yep, Michigan will apply for it in about 2 years and the NCAA will approve it.

It does suck for him and Michigan. I know he was really good and a pain in the ass for opposing teams.

Is there some sort of rule about if you took a redshirt then taking a medical one?

I don't know if there is a rule for it, but once you start your scholarship, you have 5 years to complete your 4 years of competition. Obviously there is a process to get a 6th year when an injury takes away a year of competition, but the NCAA is not consistent in ruling on them.

Yeah, I was going to say that it's not a guarantee. Actually kind of rare, isn't it?

I think it is rare. I'm not sure but I think really the only way they grant a 6th is if injuries end 2 seasons of play. Notre Dame had a basketball player denied last year and then Jamoris Slaugther denied last month. Both of them sat out their freshman seasons then had a later season lost to injury. Then again Scott Martin got a 6th year in basketball this year, but he sat out a year to transfer in from Purdue. Like I said they aren't consistent at all so there is no telling what they'd rule.

Gardner was granted an extra year of eligibility for his freshman year after playing in the 4th or 5th game of the year, right? There was no talk of him sitting out for medical reasons until late in 2012 and all of a sudden he is approved. Who knows.

I think this is what I was reading earlier. That theyd have to show he redshirted for medical reasons.

it should be medical reasons for both years you'd think. sitting out for a year to develop with no injury problems shouldn't warrant an extra year.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the 5th year at the end of 4 years is pretty easy to get. That 6th year isnt as common. I think when people hear "granted an extra year" they automatically think 6th year, but usually its just that 5th year.

Gardner's situation was much different. RRod burnt his redshirt, then he got hurt later in the year. So he was eligible for a medical redshirt, still playing 4 years (technically) in 5 seasons.

From what I understand, medical redshirts have to end a season, and don't apply to getting injured before the season starts.

I don't think it will matter anyway. He'll either take the season off entirely, and return for 2014, then make a go for the NFL. Or, he does the same, but tries to play at the end of 2013, while not quite 100%.

Medicals don't have to be for 2 seasons. Re: Gardner.

Personally, I think a kid in this situation should get the 6th year, and it should be pretty much guaranteed.

Huh? Gardner got his year back after the staff burned it due to playing time, not injury. The 2 season thing I'm referring to doesn't really apply. I shouldn't have included that part in my post, was just pointing to an example where the NCAA isn't consistent.

yeah normal 5th years where someone redshirts because they aren't ready to play are obviously very common. 5th years where a partial season was lost to injury isn't that common is it?

No those are pretty common. OSU has had 2 in the past 2 years. Just as a small example. The 6th year is uncommon and has to be a pretty outstanding circumstance. Tyler Moeller was granted a 6th year to complete his 4th year after his head injury.

I think it's pretty common, you just wouldn't realize it unless it happened on your team or to a high profile player.
