Were taking the kids up to Kalahari for the weekend. I need help on dining around there. What's the hotspot? Maybe a hidden gem in the city?

We want to stay away from fast food and the typical franchises.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

There are no shortage of places to eat here... Outside of your chain places, you have:

Weazy's (formerly Danny Boy's)

Samurai Japanese Steak House (good food/hibachi tables)

Crush

The Better Half

Hot Dog Tony's

Water Street Bar and Grille

Sortino's

Beradi's

Cameo

Chet & Matt's (I prefer Cameo pizza)

Mekong (great Vietnamese food and terrific beer selection)

And take the kids/family to Toft's Dairy for Ice Cream... Trust me.

And there are also plenty more options for food, but those are some of the more "local" faves..

Without a doubt I would go to Mekong. Unreal beer selection on tap and in bottles. No wine, no liquor, beer is the answer.

Second favorite place up there is Thisty Pony. Fricken chicken, great fried food, decent beer selection.

If you go to Toft's, get the small cone, don't be a hero. The employees will talk you down to a small.

The Brown derby is not the original Gervis. Not that impressed by it.

Chet & Matt is good pizza, Cameos is better but in a scatchy part of town for outsiders.

It's located at Cedar Point. Pretty sure it's seasonal with the park.

Weezy's/Danny Boys is awesome. Gives you huge portions so you can take back to hotel to warm up.

Cameo's for sure.

Water Street Bar and Grille

Crush

If you venture out just a bit to Catawba, I agree with the poster who mentioned Mon Ami. Also, Nagoya is near Mon Ami, and is much better than the Japanese steakhouse in Sandusky.

I was going to say Bay Harbor Inn at Cedar Point, but I just checked and they are closed til May.

Nagoya is legit, but also quite a bit more expensive as well.

Everyone here is wrong. The place to go is Red Gables on Cleveland Rd. Near the airport. Best kept secret in the town IMHO.

The owner also runs a sub shop next door called Jack's Deli which has some of the best subs I've ever eaten but I believe he shuts it down in the winter still.

If you want a good burger at a hole in the wall kind of place I say that the Old Dutch Tavern is a good place to go too.

The best food, but very steep on prices and I would not take kids there.

It's only $3-$5 more a plate than the one in Sandusky, but I think worth it.

Monami is for trashy people that like to think they are high class.
