You stepped up and did the right thing and more than likely saved this dogs life. My guess is he'll be your best fried and won't want to leave your side within a few days. You're gonna have no choice but to keep him.

He's more active this morning. Still some intermittent breathing, but he seems to be adjusting. We're taking him to a clinic to make sure he's okay, but I think we're getting too attached to him to give him away now.

The people at the hospital last night said that they would guess he's about 3 years old. If so, he's likely full-grown, but he's past the age when most dogs get neutered. We had all our other dogs fixed by the time they were 18 months, but he's got a pair of tennis balls down there, so we're going to have to figure something out.

But I'm pretty sure he's staying. Our house is starting to be a flipping zoo (now 4 dogs, a lizard, and a fish), but our last two dogs were rescues, so I guess I wouldn't have it any other way on them.

Damn, I kind of want to tell everyone to rescue a dog if they haven't already (though it's cool to hear everyone who has). It's a good feeling.

But I'd be a little worried taking in a dog that may have been part of a dog fighting ring, especially in a neighborhood around kids. The difference between that dog biting someone, accidentally or otherwise, and a puppy you raised is potentially tens of thousands of dollars.

Really nothing to do with pitbulls as far as reality might go. But as far as perception, if that dog bites a kid a jury is going to bend him over. There is, in fact, a record that this dog was likely trained to fight. That, as they say in the insurance industry, is a high liability.

He's not going to be outside off a cable, and one of the things we were planning on doing at our new home, anyway, was fencing in the yard, which would keep any neighbor kids from going back there without permission.

You should check with your insurance. I'm guessing they don't care what you plan to do, although a fenced in back yard might mitigate the premium hike.

How many people do you know have actually been sued because their dog bit someone? The ratio of dog bites to actual lawsuits is very miniscule.

Don't worry about the dog biting anyone or lawsuits. Just keep the dog and give it a good home.

Oh we will. I'm a pretty strong fan of covering my bases. If it goes up a little bit, it's no big deal. Our mortgage is going to be so low that I'm happy to pay it to keep him.

And in one instance the dog was on a cable and some kids were teasing it on HIS property. Didn't matter.

Rescued my dog. Was abused, starved, and a child beat him with a wiffle ball bat. Great dog.

Had to put him down second week of December. Had cancer and he was in serious pain due to his back being out of place(vastly more so because of the abuse). Don't want to steal the thread.

A lot of that behavior is conditioned, so it can indeed be untaught (I'm told this about the bed-shitting and tearing up, at least, as we dealt with these with our last dog). However, that sounds like a dog that needs a more trained professional, as that behavior is pretty extreme. I'd maybe contact a few of the animal rescues in your area.

If none are available, though, I know there are people here in OC that have local contacts in their respective communities. I could ask the rescues that we're in contact with, and others could as well.

What kind of dog is it, and how long have you had it? Is it older or a puppy? Size?
