This part isn't advertised.
Between 1999 and 2008 I think I took a total of one month of vacation. One week of that was our honeymoon, and even then I had to keep my blackberry on.
That isn't happening again.
What really drove it home to me was when a partner in did a lot of work for (and was being groomed to replace when he retired) collapsed with brain cancer. He was given six months to live. And yet a few months later, on Christmas morning, he's emailing me with changes he needs to a pleading. Two college-aged kids, wife, etc that he won't see in a few months when he's dead, but Christmas morning he's working and expecting me to do the same. At some point, it's just not worth it.
I worked far, far more holidays and weekends than I ever took vacation days. On those rare occasions I bumped into people we used to be friends with, they'd ask what I was up to, and the only thing I could think of was work. No hobbies, no interests, nothing--Just work.
So I'm making a move so I can turn back into a real person.
