I personally hope we default. It would be a good way for the boomers to share some of the pain they've caused by electing officials who over promise benefits that they can't pay for.

haha ok. When I was a paid football coach, even I had to pay into STRS. I made like $1200/yr. Can't wait until I collect that retirement. :)

I am not paying that gym bill until I actually have income to pay for it. IN addition, I am reducing my expenses in other areas immediately.
This is simply un-American. Everyone knows if you are struggling financially you just keep spending until the gubmit checks start rolling in.

If a bill comes due you have to pay for it period. When the monthly Gym bill comes in and you have a year contract you don't have the option just not to pay the bill even if you think it was a mistake to make that contract at the outset and you may have to pay for it with a credit card. This is not a hard concept to grasp.
Someone is choosing to ignore our current President's speeches and comments in both 2006 and 2008 with regards to this same exact subject.

There is no possible way he could contradict himself more than what he is doing right now (Obama that is).

The United States saying "I can no longer pay you" constitutes for such things constitutes a breach of contract which is a default in the same way failing to pay bondholder his interest payment is a fault.

If you want to stop going to the gym you have to pass it through congress. If you want to stop paying people food stamps, etc. these things all have to go through congress. In the mean time, until that stops, it is a default unless those bills are paid.

If you have a year long lease and you can't pay after six months and you move home with your parents you're still going to have to pay. Not paying, and simply reshuffling your bills around and defaulting on some is not an option for the United States of America.

In order to do that you would have to get bills through Congress to stop that spending to meet revenue. (Not really an option anyway as that would tank the economy as household budgets are not analagous to the federal budget but alas).

If those "immediate cuts" do not happen the United States must pay its bills with the credit card because unlike a deadbeat who is allowed to default on some of his bills; the United States doing so would be a disaster.

My wife worked part time for the local school district for a few years and paid into SERS. Which is what you would have paid into as a school employee. When she quit we were sent a letter that we had the option to remove those funds from the system. We opted to do so and they sent us a check.

Doood how many times do I have to say that I don't care about what Obama said/did during his protest vote years as he geared up for his presidential run talking tough about fiscal discipline.

he. was. an. idiot. and. wrong. for. opposing. raising. the. debt. ceiling.

It is a good thing that he has changed his mind now and seems to grasp how truly bad it would be. He has admitted that he was wrong for doing so.

Ludicrous. We're already defaulting in the form of higher taxes and changing our "promises" to our younger citizens. How would telling current SS recipients that they'll have to deal with reduced benefits any different? It is nothing more than generational theft, and a pathetic administration that can't control its spending.

What Obama and his biggest fan here don't understand, unsurprisingly, is the debt ceiling is in place to prevent spending we can't afford. Lacking a balanced budget amendment, the purpose of the debt ceiling is to prevent run-away spending, which is what we have.

They are dutibound, IMO, to use this to force the issue of addressing spending. Obama said we needed to work on reducing the deficit during the campaign - but, apparently, no hurry. There's lots of work to do - so why is he running away from starting to put it on the table? He's simply trying to browbeat the Repubs because he has no intention of cutting spending (on the contrary, he wants to increase it).

Obama is destined to go down as one of the worst POTUS in history simultaneously wrecking the economy while he blows up the deficit. Ironically, his only chance to salvage this would be pushback from the Repubs and forced into some necessary choices.

also as far as union protecting bad teachers... in our district after your first year which is probationary, it is the administration not the union who decides if you get to come back the next year to even become part of the union.
I don't want to stray too far off topic, but my understanding is while you hold a Resident Educator License(4 year probationary license) the district doesn't need to give a reason for your dismissal. Only when you receive a Professional License and a continuing contract.

As for your first part, I don't think we'll see that.

Which budget presented over the past four years should the congress have passed so they can "stop going to the gym"?

Like I said...the democrats in Congress who won't pass that are analogous to a spouse who refuses to go along with what you think are sound financial decisions. Given those constraints, the right thing to do is raise the borrowing limit as opposed to default when you're the United States of America. You've got to win elections to kick the annoying wife to the curb.

It is a good thing the House GOP seems to have figured this out.

I disagree. By raising the debt limit we only put ourselves in a situation whereby we will accumulate more bills that must be paid later....when we will have to raise the debt limit again.
