when he makes a huge mistake?


I can think of 3 instances in my life when I have felt bad fof someone in a game when they made a complete horrible play. Most times I just roll with the punches, maybe get mad at the time for messing up big time, or laugh when it is for a guy I hate.

First two were: Bettis when he fumled at the goaline against the Colts that almost lost the steelers the game in the playoffs. Second was a HS kid from a local rival. It was OT and he missed I 2 Exta point/field goals that woulda beat us in the playoffs.


And last night that duke RB who fumbled the ball while they were goin in for the TD. Dont know why...just felt bad for the kid. He doesnt fumble...they win that game. If ya didnt see it....tie game, less than 2 min to go. Duke at the UC 5 yard line. RB fumbles the ball up the middle. UC ends up scoring 14 points in a minute. Go from winning the first bowl game in 50-60 yrs to getting beat by 2 TD.s

When you can say just one word, and EVERYONE knows the blunder you're talking about ... AND the one word is the guy's NAME ... then I've just gotta feel bad for the guy.

I felt bad for a few of the Duke players last night. There was the one receiver that fumbled on the goal line. Instead of going up 23-3, they lose all momentum. And I also felt bad for their kicker. Dude hits a 53 yarder but it gets wiped off the board because of the illegal substitution penalty. Then the kid misses the 48 yarder.

I usually end up feeling bad for kickers when they have a chance to win or tie a game and end up missing a field goal and their team loses.

Didnt see taht other fumble, but even at that when the score was 16-3 it doesnt seem as bad when it is earlier in the game!

Pete Rose.

I was just a kid when the Big Red Machine was rolling and Rose was such an intense player. His downfall was his own making. Its sad he threw it all away.

Buckner and Scott Norwood top the list for me.

The Georgetown guy who passed the ball to James Worthy, thinking he was his teammate, at the end of the '82 NC Game (after Jordan hit the game-winner).

Ernest Byner and his infamous "The Fumble" play during the 1988 AFC Championship game against the Broncos. Byner was playing a great game and looked poised to score a TD to tie the game late when the ball was stripped from his hands at the 2-yard line.

Still painful to remember that one. :(

In a similiar situaton as Pete Rose.....was watching an old OSU/UM game on Classic for a few minutes. Usually dont watch the old games but at times I get a laugh out of the old style uniforms, baggy jerseys, huge pads, etc. They were raving about this FROSH OSU QB and that "he has a very bright future...".

It was Art Schlitcher (sp?)

If it went from 53 to 48, that would mean penalty on defense. Why wouldn't coach just decline? Or was it a dead ball penalty.

It was on the defense. Cincy had no timeouts, and no way to ice the kicker. The Duke coach thought that UC send the 12th man out on purpose to draw the penalty and ice the kicker without taking a timeout. (I think that's bullshit because what coach in their right mind would want to give the kicker an extra 5 yards when he's already looking at a 53 yarder.)

In any case, the flag was thrown right before the ball was snapped and the play was blown dead, and it couldn't be declined.

Think the player ran on at the last second and it was called a penalty which is supposed to stop the play. It was like when a coach calls a TO at the last second and yet the kick goes on as normal but ruled not to count.

Coach was pissed when interviewed..he thinks it should be unsportsmanlike instead of the substitution..said it was like a way to ice the kicker.

IB4BR: Webster Slaughter missed a block that would have put Byner in the endzone.

Beat me to it.

I would like to see a tweak to that rule. If it is on the defense then throw the flag and run the play and the offense can either accept or decline.

I also would like to see the rule tweaked as well of the allowing the other team to substitute when the offense does. In a game with a MAC team earlier this year a team had no timeouts. Guy did not get out of bounds and the offense ran the kicking team onto the field for a FG at the buzzer. They were flagged for not giving the defense enough time to substitute and hence loss the 3 points.

I havent checked to see if that was the correct interpretation of the rule or not, but if so then that is one that wasnt fully thought out.

Darius Washington missing both free throws at the end of the game to lose 75-74 to Louisville in the 2005 CUSA Championship. I seriously can't even imagine that feeling. Also Phil Mickelson when he choked away the US Open, that was awful, Adam Scott in this years British Open and Jim Furyk in the US Open this season

Buckner for 3 reasons....

His career is defined by that play.....and he was a hell of a player for a very long time with enough hits and doubles to be in the HOF

All year long they used a defensive replacement for him late in the games.

Mookie beats him to 1st....Mookie could fly, was batting lefty and pitcher didn't get a good enough jump to beat him.

I concur on all three points.

I have said it for a long time...I think Mookie beats it out at first base. I was a mets fan briefly when a local guy was drafted by them in '84 in the 2nd round I believe so I remember alot from theat WS run.

I dont have a video.....basically it was how I posted it. Not much time left...guy tackled in play and the kicking team sprints onto the field and kicks it right away and barely gets it away. Did the defense have time to substitute? Well ya could tell they were kicking it as alot of guys ran onto the field.

The one commentator was talking about how it was the right call...but he wasnt one of the normal guys and I am not sure if he understood all the rules as he didnt sound like a normal announcer. Thing he was one

Elway in the 1990 SuperBowl (I wasn't following football yet, but I've caught it on replay) - The whole game. 10-for-26 with 2 picks and a measly 106 yards on the losing end of a 55-0 drubbing on the biggest stage in football. That's just gotta suck. Felt better watching him win a pair later on.

Never. I hate kickers. I've never played on a team with a good kicker. My college kicker was a douche and sucked. Dallas has had kicking woes in recent years.

'fucking kickers, dude' is the text anytime a kicker misses one. I hate them.
