There's a difference between having ads on a site and having intrusive ads on a site that's probably generated by what the site offers to a person and how much they want to deal with anything to get that service. For a message board, I'd be completely cool with ads like we have here, as they don't get in the way and take up little area, but absolutely hated what the Huddle turned into with infolinks and those banners that popped up on pages and tons of ads. With last.fm (online radio I can adjust to fulfill all my evil euro-metal desires), I can tolerate having a 10-15 second commercial every 3 songs because I'm getting to listen to a lot of underground groups I'm not familiar with for free AND have the freedom to add/delete stuff from my library at will. But if I didn't have that freedom, I probably wouldn't be cool with interruptions.
