While I agree with the notion that expressing these thoughts in a public forum isn't the smartest thing to do, I tend to agree with him. I have an extreme distaste for nonsense, and pretending that a large number, if not most, D1 football players are there for "an education" is the pinnacle of crapola. If we're going to have big time college football, let's be honest about it. If someone wants to major in a traditional program, fine. For the rest, offer an "athletic performance" major. Teach them the kind of basic life skills they can use that in case they make it to the next level, they won't end up on "Broke II" on ESPN.

English must be one of the classes he wasn't ever interested in. I also agree though. We've all been in this position, especially those of us who have been in college. Even people pursuing graduate degrees or further education for professional advancement. That's life. It's stupid to Tweet it though.

I like this idea a lot. I was in quite a few classes with Sanzenbacher, Saine, Cordle, and was actually in a couple group projects with Dex Larrimore because we had the same specialization. I don't mean that to namedrop, just that there are football players who actually do care and appreciate the business education they were getting for free.

As for the people who don't care about academics, your idea of a "future planning" type major is WAY superior to forcing these kids to take sociology or anthropology or African American studies when we know they won't try at all (generally).

The same thing that the majority of music performance majors do, which isn't singing or playing an instrument for a living, I suppose. Or theatre majors, or any number of other "legitimate" majors. What does he do in your "minor league" scenario and washes out?

Granted, but we know that many aren't going to succeed (or in some cases, are not capable of succeeding) in a traditional college course of study. Unless we're going to blow up the whole system, and in reality, we aren't, why don't we try to make it so these kids get something from the experience beyond Saturday?

I agree that there are a lot of people who aren't here for school. But that's the problem. Their priorities are out of whack. Most of these guys won't see the NFL. A lot of the ones that do see the NFL are out in a couple of years.

It needs to be impressed on these guys that they have an opportunity to get an education and set themselves up for life. Should they kill them with academics? No, but a lot of these guys aren't taking the school part as seriously as they need to be. Even at the best football schools the majority of the recruits won't be playing in the NFL.

And as far as turning the college game into a farm system for the NFL officially? Not going to work. For the most part no one watches the other football leagues already out there. It would kill the appeal of college football. Why would anyone want to watch a lesser version of professional football? Does the farm system for MLB or NBA get anywhere close to the appeal as their top levels? No, the same would happen to college football popularity if it was somehow officially switched over to a paid farm system.

They aren't blowing an opportunity as they have no chance whatsoever of being successful. So look at it this way. Football gives them the opportunity to do something they wouldn't otherwise do. Who is to say the light bulb doesn't go off sometime during college and they realize the value.

Your idea of just letting them play football and do nothing else is a disservice to these young athletes. If they don't want to take advantage of the great opportunity being GIVEN to them, then I really don't feel sorry for them.

Also, playing football is not a right that the college and university's are required to provide. So why force the schools to do this?
