You might be right. Maybe they're comparable to a lot of the 80's hairbands. Perfect example of music that got A LOT BETTER over time because of nostalgia.

Like Bon Jovi is awesome now. But I honestly can't remember if I thought very much of them in the 80's. A couple of songs, sure, but a lot of that (and most of the Top Gun soundtrack) was just sappy shit. Maybe a fair comparison with the club garbage that dominates today.

Personally I don't think music was very good in the last decade. However, I still think the fact that you build memories around the songs of the time that I'll enjoy hearing those songs later on. For instance, I'll always go back and think about spring break when I hear songs that were popular at the time.

If it's modern music of the past decade or so and I'm listening to it, it's probably underground black/death/etc. metal. That stuff tends to not get public acclaim and popularity, therefore, I'm probably not listening to anything that will be considered iconic by the masses. Too bad for them...

Adele. I can see her sticking around for a long time.

Taylor Swift as well. Mainly because of her writing ability. The bands and artists that last the test of time are the ones who are talented writers as well as musicians.

and a silly amount more were all creating awesome albums and songs in the 2000s. If you think music sucks now you've simply stopped trying to find good music and been listening to the same stuff you always had been or whatever came on the radio.

Except for Radiohead. Kid A was 2000 and In Rainbows was 2004.

Oh and I definitely think LCD Soundsystem will have some lasting influence. They made dance music that actually mattered.

Of the list I quoted, my personal preference would to put radiohead at the bottom, yes even below U2.

"I've only seen Mumford on Conan" lolol do yourself a favor and actually listen to music. 2010 was an amazing year for music, 2012/2013 looks to be amazing too.

I think this thread answers the OP's question unintentionally -- the question was to name iconic songs, and no one can, I just see a bunch of semi-talented bands and artists listed.

Really good question ... Now in my 30s, I can hear myself sounding old, but I hate today's music (I admit I am a product of 90s grunge). That being said, here is a handful of music from the past 10-12 years (I think anyway) that may stand the test of time:

Eminem - Lose Yourself
The Killers - Mr. Brightside
50 Cent - In Da Club
Alicia Keys - Fallin

Ummm ... that's about all I can come up with, and even those songs wouldn't crack the top 100 or the 80s or 90s.

There has been a lot of good club music the past 10-15 years (Eminem has 3 or 4 of them). Maybe that's comparable to disco, but more staying power.

That's because I rarely listen to just a single song. Much more of an album person really.
