So is it just me, or has music almost completely sucked for the past 10-15 years? Or I wonder if, like the 80's, some of this music will seem much better 20 years from now than it is today.

What songs & artists will still be playing on the radio 20 years from now? I'm sure there will be some genre stations, so maybe the better question is what would you enjoy hearing 20 years from now?

Like, does Lady Gaga or Katy Perry really stand the test of time? I say no.

I'm guessing a lot of music sucked back then as well, but the good stuff is what stuck around and made it to today. Hopefully that is what happens with today's shitty music cause there is plenty of it.

Theirs only a few artists who have stayed relevant the past 20 or so years.
In no particular order-

Madonna
Chris Cornell
Red Hot Chili Peppers (Anthony and Flea mostly)

Just naming a few off top of my head.




A lot of great musicians never get a chance to make it big anymore.

Rap has been pretty decent, though nowhere near as iconic as in the '90s, the past decade with fresh brands of hip-hop being honed by guys like Kid Cudi, Kendrick, Wiz Khalifa, Charles Hamilton, Childish Gambino and Tyga. And then you still have the heavy-hitters in Wayne, Eminem and Kanye still putting out high-quality work.

As for rock, I am a Coldplay, Keane, Verve, Radiohead, Snow Patrol, Third Eye Blind, etc. fan and all of these groups have produced some pretty solid albums in recent memory, at least over the past decade at one point or another. So, overall, I think music is in a good place.

Since I am mainly a Rock/Metal type of guy, those are my choices. I love a ton of small/ no name bands but those will not be remembered in 20 years.

I would say that within the last twenty years those are probably the biggest bands. All who have good albums and good music. You could also add Linkin Park and NickelBack (terrible) to that list as they fit the 10-15 year range I guess since the bands I mentioned above are closer to 20+ years since their debut. However I don't believe those two bands will stand the test of time. Nickelback will be the joke band of this era.

All of those bands had their prime more than 15 years ago. So, yes music in the last 10-15 has sucked.

Not sure of any artists really.....Flo Rida? Lol

Songs.....stuff like Bad Romance, but really can't think of others off the top of my head. Pop stuff that is big with the 8-15 year old probably the most.

Seems like most of the popular stuff today is club & R&B.

Empire State of Mind (both versions) is one song I really like.

I think Adele and Amy Whinehouse might be two artists who's music sticks around.

Yep, a number of those groups I was actually thinking about when I said "gee, can't see really anyone like that in the past 10-15 years"

80s music sucked during the 80s. I hated it then but like a lot of it now because it's nostalgic. Whatever is pop at the time is annoying to me. Suppose if I was in my 20-30s in the 70s, I would hate the 70s bu I love I because I was just a kid and it takes me back to when I was young. Sorry I didn't answer the question lol.

I think you're right about the nostalgia factor. But it's hard to imagine the same effect for Katy Perry or Gaga 20 years from now.

But the 80's still had some great music even then - Metallica, G&R, U2, the Boss, Michael Jackson...Whitney Houston? (not listing everyone I liked, just talented singers/groups). Then into the 90's you had Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden and others mentioned. Depeche Mode somewhere in there. R.E.M., Tom Petty...Plenty that you knew were good then and remain popular because they are good, not because of nostalgia.

Agreed at best Lady GaGa is Madonna-lite. I was never the biggest Madonna fan but I still put in Like a Prayer or Express Yourself in the iTunes list - I don't see any of GaGa's work doing that, maybe Poker Face but I doubt it. Too much studio manipulation, auto tune and lack of real creativity with the music.

And I actually think Lady Gaga might be super-talented. She's selling out for the cash right now...maybe in a few years she'll make some really good music.

I would disagree with some of those in regards to their prime. I think the Foo Fighters keep getting better with each album. Also the Colour and Shape was 15 years ago I believe so even if you think that was their prime that fits within your 15 years. Their newest album wasting light is a terrific album.

Radiohead- Ok Computer came out in 1997, That was their prime in my opinion
RHCP- They have put out quality work this decade

RHCP- They have put out quality work this decade
I see your point, but one you are stretching the decade to include those albums, (Foo Fighters would be in my top 5 active bands right now) and two I would compare that to saying you really liked the Rolling Stones between '75-'85 when their prime was '64-'74 or Aerosmith '87-'97. Still very good music and but not their best efforts.

Yeah, I was thinking more of bands that STARTED in the last 10-15 years. I'd agree with the two you listed, not a big fan of way-overplayed-Coldplay, but they have a few songs I like. I've only heard Mumford & Sons on Conan but they were pretty amazing.

Maybe The Fray? Not sure, they may kind of fall into the Nickelback category.

Carrie Underwood will definitely be around.

So will Adam Levine/Maroon5 (the former won't be hurt by a strong stint on The Voice)

I think you gotta put Coldplay up there. I also like the vote for Red Hot Chili Peppers. Lady Gaga has the talent, but will she will she put out any more classics like Bad Romance?!

As for other "classic" pop songs... I know it may sound corny, but I'm sure you be hearing plenty of Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift.
