I think he'll get a HC job somewhere, prolly in the MAC or at another mid-level FBS school.

Yea. I'm wondering where he will be HC too.

What from him coaching last year and how bad the defense has been leads you to believe he'll be a head coach?

Urbie was most likely told to keep Fickell for a minimum of 1 yr and if it worked out fine but if it didn't Urbie could bring in somebody he knows and trusts much more. So far it looks strained between the two of them and Fick is probably moving on... HC @ Akron nmaybe? Vrabel will be leaving with him.

Precisely. At least a head coach anywhere that matters. With all the turmoil of last year, I think an interested party might be willing to overlook his performance then, but the weak defensive performance so far, despite having a fairly veteran group, can't be helping his cause.

I don't dispute this, but why would they tell a guy that they bent over backwards to get to keep someone from a corrupt regime?

Because his scenario most likely never happened.

Luke did as well as anyone else could have done and Smith owed him. And maybe it didnt happen that way...but I've never seen a new HC with the contacts and pull Urbie has, keep someone like Fickell unless he was told that was part of the deal for at least 1 year.

Fickell will be the next head coach of Ohio State after Urban is done. Book it!

I agree that the defense has been less than stellar so far this season, but I'll reserve putting the blame on Fickell until down the road a bit. Even though I'm a big fan of Shazier, the other linebackers seem so be a serious weakness on this team. Sabino, Grant, et al need to step up for us to have any chance of winning our division.

Yea, can't put it all on Fickell. The defense has underperformed at every level. Shazier is all over the field, but has the tendency not to wrap up, as does Bryant and Barnett. Curtis Grant just isn't performing at all. The d-line struggled until they finally got some pressure this week. The secondary is having too many blown assignments. This is on the entire defensive staff, not just Fickell.

Also, just like a team, it takes a coaching staff time to become a cohesive group. This defense will be fine by the end of the year.

Grant has disappointed. But where has the killer dline play we expected been?

I've gotta think both Fickell and Vrabel will be gone after this year, sooner for Vrabel if the substandard play continues. Granted, the players have to step up but, like all sports, you can't fire all the players. The coaching staff is ultimately responsible and unless there is a big-time turnaround someone will go. As for Luke, I agree that Meyer probably was forced to carry him for one year, more so for his ability to serve as a liason to the returning players than for his coaching ability. Someone at a mid-major level will take Fickell just because he has TOSU on his resume.

The defense has been bad on every level, so I guess they should can the entire staff.

This.
The bad tackling and lack of communication is on the position coaches.
I honestly think Grant and Sabino just aren't that good, which is why we don't see them often. The breakdowns in the secondary is definitely something the position coaches should be working on.

Makes you think maybe Heacock was the brains behind the defense not Fickell. I didn't think that they should have kept him in the first place. That has got to be an uncomfortable relationship at best. I like Fickell and his dedication to OSU but for now he needs to be somewhere else but probably not a head coach. AS for Vrabel, he is a very inexperienced coach, give him a chance, I would rather see him have the LBs than the D-Line though. Combs is not doing well with the secondary, perhaps too big of a jump from High School head coach to the B1G. I thought Withers was supposed to be a defensive guru.

That's the bigger question for me than even the LB & DB play. Everybody is all enamored with Simon's "guts & glory" speech but his on-field contribution has been far below his potential. Is he getting Dbl-teamed? Sure he is, that's what happens when you are supposed to be a stud. Get over it and get after it!

All I'm saying is Big John needs to let his play do his talking the next two weeks and his potential leadership will get this ship back on track.

vball said a MAC level school. If Cholly Weis staff members Mike Heyward and Rob Ianello received MAC head coaching gigs Luke Fickell's more than qualified.

Citgo.

He cost us two games last year because he was a bad game manager and this year our defense has been downright awful.

Ianello was actually hired over Fickell at Akron.
