Dad died in 2008 at the age of 84....growing up, I think he only attended 1 sporting event of mine through my youth and high sschool days.....really bothered me until years later after my mother died, I was divorced , so Dad and I kind of had a "new beginning" and really got to know each all over again...I miss the ole guy. He taught me what a man really was and to this day I give him credit for the relationship I have with my kids and grandkids( even though I have no biological kids...the kids are mine!)...I had a very good relationship with Dad for the last 15 yrs of his life and found out in those years just how much I was (am) like him...Thanks Dad....

That does suck. I used to think about that but I don't worry about it any more. The guy my mom is dating is awesome and will make one hell of a grandpa, even if he won't be their biological grandfather. I just can't imagine my kids not having the same relationship with their grandpa that I did with mine. Also a bonus that my wife's dad is a great guy.

wow...so much like me. I loved my father but he only came to one sporting event....but I remember that insignificant JV wrestling match 44 years ago like it was yesterday right down to the very details ....just because he was there. I was a pretty good high school pitcher...3 year letterman....but he never saw me pitch a game.

As I said in an earlier post...I learned from his examples...both good and bad. I had 3 kids who were pretty good athletes. I can't say that I was at every one of their games...but I'd bet that between my wife and I, we were at 95% of them, and most of the time we were both there. Needless to say, my kids really appreciated that.

Great thread folks.

My Dad is 56 and like many others on here...just one of a kind awesome. He got my mom pregnant at age 15....I was born when she was just early 16 and Dad was married at 17 1/2 and I was born before he turned 18. He was a great baseball player but had to give it up his senior year to be responsible for his son on the way.

He worked his way up the ladder at Big Bear and was a manager of the 2nd largest store in Ohio. He worked around 70 hours a week for about his last 20 years there.....only missed 1 day of work in 27 years and never missed a thing I ever did.

My Dad passed baseball with me almost every night....no pressure at all from him. When I left Wilmington College as a baseball player and transferred home it broke his heart....and typing this is breaking mine.

He's had an 800 series in bowling....2 300 games over his years.

Unbelievable at drawing

He's been known to get up on stage on the weekends and out-shine the guys that are singing/performing.

He is one of the funniest people anywhere.

My Dad was 54 when he passed a little over a year ago. He was a great Dad, definitely taught me about hard work and personal accountability. I do miss him. He wasn't a talkative guy and was old school in regards to being/showing emotions to his kids. We knew he loved us and worked his ass off to help us have a good childhood. I am sad my children who are 5 and 3 will not remember him and get to know him.

Thankful to have that kind of relationship with my father.

Amazing how a bunch of yahoos like all of us could get on here and intelligently discuss a topic that is so polarizing from one post to the next. I tried to call all 3 of my kids last night (they are in different parts of the country) just because I was motivated by this thread. And lo and behold I was ofer 3 and had to leave a message with each of them. The two girls will call back today and immediately ask if everything is all right? The Navy SEAL trainee will call and say "yo old man...wasup?" Can't wait.

Outside of Christ Himself, my father was the greatest man to walk the face of the earth. He was humble and giving to anyone and everyone he came into contact with. He didn't teach with words but rather with actions.


I'd give 10 years off my life to be able to sit with him and talk for just one more day. He's the reason my son is who he is and for that alone I am forever thankful.

My dad passed away in 97' at the age of 53, I was 26. He was my hero, mentor and friend. He was also a teacher and coach of mine. Never missed anything I did. I couldnt imagine a childhood without him.
