Seems to be the case a lot in situations like yours. Pretty cool actually.
My grandpa died before I was born (both actually). I am named after him, but never had the pleasure to met either. My mom raves about her dad and my dad still gets teary eyed when talking about his father.
Im actually on my 3rd grandpa on my moms side, and the first one I have gotten to really "know" my dads mom never re-married. But my grandpa growing up was awesome. So giving and never wanted gifts in return (birthday/xmas/etc). He taught me how to fish and paid for my education (yeah, Im a private school kid lol) and even set up a trust fund for me (locked until I am 50). I wish I had the ability to actually know him, he died when I was in 4th grade falling down the stairs at night while coming to check on my grandma who was on the first floor recovering from a brain tumor surgery. Very sad day.
