Phillips was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning. Phillips tossed the ball back toward pitcher Jared Hughes. Hughes shouted something at Phillips. Phillips headed to first. The umpires quickly intervened.

Once play resumed, Hughes threw over to first, even though Phillips was basically standing at the bag. Phillips and Andrew McCutchen had some words after the inning.

I did not see Phillips after the game. I spent very little time in the clubhouse because of deadline.

“I was not expecting the ball to come back towards me,” Hughes said told Pittsburgh writers. “Usually the ball goes to the bat boy after someone gets hit. I was kind of startled, and it upset me.”

“That’s kind of Brandon being Brandon, isn’t it?” Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle. “We’ve got no problem with that.”

Obviously, Phillips’ accusation in the tweet was a strong one. I’m sure it will come up tomorrow.

And it's hard to imagine a guy who's been in the bigs virtually all year (minus a 10-day minor league/rest stint) on a team with (currently) 10 minority players (including their superstar-caliber guy AND the starting pitcher Hughes replaced) randomly issuing racist slurs.
