First of all, in America it is def. OSU Michigan NOT Boston vs NYY. Those two play like 10 times a year. OSU vs Michigan is THE GAME
However,
Celtic vs Rangers in Scotland is a bigger rivalry. People are killed every year for fighting (and used to be killed just for supporting) at this game.
Then comes Boca Juniors vs River Plate (Argentina). Again, like in Scotland people are often killed after these matches due to fighting with each other.
After that, Barca vs Real and United Liverpool are at least on par with Ohio State vs Michigan.

If fights and deaths make rivalries great, you could say Holden vs. Ford fans in the Bathhurst 1k, Australian v8 super cars.ohiobucks1;1233324 wrote: People are killed every year for fighting (and used to be killed just for supporting) at this game.

Ohio State Michigan.
IMO school rivalries High School and College have much deeper roots and a longer history than any other pro rivalry. With the exception of the MLB, they do have history, but rivalries like NY v Boston and St Louis v Cubs don't have the intensity that CFB and High School Football can bring on a single friday or Saturday in the fall.

Something that will generate differing opinions is what makes a rivalry great. But people will often have different requirements.
Hatred between the teams?
Hatred between the fans?
Respectful dislike or complete disdain?
Success of the teams in the rivalry games?
Success of the teams independent of the rivalry games?
But since that's not the question I'll just throw out my opinion.
I think OSU v. UM is the best rivalry.
I'm definitely biased as I can't properly evaluate any rivalry outside of the US as I don't follow Cricket in India, Soccer in Europe or many other foreign sports.
As far as US sports go, I personally don't think professional sport rivalries are as meaningful because of players switching teams too frequently.
I think College Football rivalries tend to be the most important because 1 loss kills a season most of the time (National Championship Hopes), that's not true in all other sports. And of the college football rivalries, OSU v. UM is the big one for me, but I'm biased.

Another great rivalry that people often don't think about is the Olympics.
US Capitalism vs. Communistic Countries
Used to be US v. USSR, then Russia, now China.
But the element of national pride, and also which way is better (Free Will of athletes and their work ethic or State Sponsored programs to "find" and develop the best).

ESPN already crowned OSU vs scUM with this title and Yankees vs BoSox 2nd. I think Brazil vs Germany in soccer was 3rd.

Well I'll still tune in for a big SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, etc... game. Most I know will watch OSU pwn UM as well. Yet I don't know a single person that gives a fuck about Army Navy, let alone watch it.Fly4Fun;1233402 wrote:Agreed, but that can be said of most if not all rivalries.
