His comments were so completely outrageous that it deserves a special thread. I cannot believe how incredibly radical and divisive this guy is.

Correct. Whenever our Dear Leader gets off his controlled teleprompter speech, we are given insight into what he truly believes. The debates should help expose him.

The particular line "you didn't build that" was worded very poorly but in reality...when taken in the context of the whole speech.. it's not out of line with the theme he's always pushed...that individuals who are successful individuals, though deserving of their just rewards, have nonetheless gained necessarily from our overall regulated capitalistic system and effective system of government. Adam Smith called being aware of this fact "Self-Interest, properly understood."

The US system is VERY progressive compared with other nations (more so the lack of taxes on the lower end than high taxes on the upper end). Successful people paid for those roads, bridges and teachers, too - at what point do you say when Uncle Sam has taken his pound of flesh and then some? It not like rich people are somehow free riding or getting more than their share of benefit from the system.

Obama is basically saying "work harder and make more money so we can take more in taxes to distribute". It's like the govt is forcing us all to buy a call option on our success, only in this case if you're successful you pay the govt more. The bottom line is this administration would shame and punish success - and maybe that's driven by the fact that Obama himself has become rich off no discernible talent aside from the ability to read a teleprompter. He's never worked in industry and so to him successful people found similar dumb luck as him.

Yessir, I agree. It's up to Romney to remind Americans in Sept & Oct of how Barry views successful Americans.

I think Romneys next commercial should be full of the Obama memes in the funny pictures thread. Would be a way for Romney to attract the youth vote.

President Obama doesn't view successful americans any differently than most pastors/priests in America. The majority of republicans who go to church every Sunday hear the same general idea and yet we don't act like they have some kind of contempt for success.

This is what drives me crazy about Obama and most libs. All we hear are comments about the rich paying their "fair share . . . fair share . . . fair share", but it's always open-ended and undefined. Nobody steps out and says, "I want the top marginal rate to be 45%, or 55%".

In 2005, the US ranked at one of the least progressive tax countries. Since then, the corporate tax rate has also become a lot less progressive. Where Gut comes up with his insane numbers boggles the mind.

I wondered when oat or believer was going to post this Fox News lie. Gets Three Pinocchio's on the old fact checker for selective quote snipping. I heard his speech and was able to understand the message and agree with it.

Here's the problem I have with that: While he's right that nobody does it alone, he's not necessarily right that all the "help" was needed in the way it was given.

Roads need built, sure, but roads were built long before governing entities turned infrastructure into a full-time business. Could I have hired a service to accomplish the same thing as what the federal government has insisted that only they are supposed to do? Of course.

There have been things from which any successful person has received benefit, and some of those things have been done by the federal government. However, those successful people didn't necessarily need the federal government to do it. In many cases, they could have either hired others to do it, or they could have used what was already in place from what others had already done.

So he's still incorrect in his sentiment, but if we're going to argue the President's point, we should argue his actual point. There's plenty with which to disagree without having to erect strawmen.

He said something like "Lots of people work hard" and "Lots of people are smart". I took that to mean that successful people haven't done anything special, and therefore they owe the government just a little bit more, i.e., "their fair share", which neither Obama nor any other liberal has specifically defined.

This is proving how dumbed down the masses have become. For anyone to think that we need government, first and foremost, is simply remarkable. Government is flat broke (despite its power to confiscate trillions from taxpayers every year), it is in dire need of a major turnaround strategy (say perhaps with a Bain Capital type process), and we all should be running FROM government as fast as Usain Bolt will be running from the starting line next week in London.

Government only exists because successful entrepreneurs took major risks to make products and services desired by society, and in so doing created wealth that was subsequently confiscated by government to fund its existence. That's it - period.

obama is simply revealing who he really is, and it appears that is not American. Sorry.

His point -- that success is dependent on governmental services -- is still incorrect to the degree that he was stating it. However, he wasn't saying people don't do anything to accomplish their own successes. Hell, what would that say for his Nobel Peace Prize?
